I can hardly believe that this sweet girl will be 16 years old in just a few weeks. I have been so blessed to be her mother! She is like the 2nd mom in our family and helps me out SO much. She's also a straight A student and participates in Varsity soccer and track at school. She is a great kid.

I've been in a bit of a post-holiday slump and haven't really been motivated to drag my camera out, but at the urging of friends and my husband, I did a few pics in the garage yesterday afternoon. I even did some with my speedlight, but in true Lisa fashion, ended up loving the naturally lit images so much more. This is my favorite from our little mini shoot. I can't believe the young woman I see here now...she was just a baby yesterday. Bittersweet!

It's beautiful as always with your work. Is there a window or something camera left to get the Rembrandt look?

Thank you! I took this in my garage. I use a long strip of black fabric clamped to the opening of the garage to block the bottom 3-4 feet to prevent up lighting from the sunlight reflecting up off of the driveway. :)

Great work all around! Love the lighting and the black-and-white conversation. Your daughter did a great job modeling as well.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm going to have my first kiddo in May. So I'm looking forward to many years of over-documenting his childhood. :)

Hi Lisa,
Not 100% sure about the hand placement. Looks like she's on a cell phone and a touch stiff. Love the light. Good job of keeping the hair from causing a shadow across her eye.

What would you have thought about the pose before there were cellphones? I'm asking sincerely. Cellphones didn't always exist; human bodies go way back. Is technology now interfering with the way we look at images that have nothing to do with it?

After the eyes, the hands caught my attention next, but in a good way. I like the placement, and it's more interesting than a face alone. Beautiful shot, and young lady.

Still would have thought them to be a bit stiff and unnatural. How often have you seen anyone standing or sitting with there hands like that? Replace with hard line phone.

To me the eyes have it and the face is framed so nicely with her hair on the left and the shadow on the right. I just find the hands to be a bit of a distraction from that. And the nails on the hands are a little distracting.

Thanks everyone! I adore her hand placement - different strokes for different folks. :)

Fantastic photo here! I love the use of natural light. You are the perfect example of someone who clearly knows how to use speed lights, external flash, light fall off, etc, but chose to use natural lighting, and it worked here! Know the rules before you break them. Great job!!
