I'm going to get a Canon 7D II and I read some where that I needed to get fast cards to use with this camera. So what CF and HD/SDHC/SDXC cards would you suggest?

This is from the manual: CF Movie Recording Size. 30 MB/sec. or faster. SD card: Recording Size. 20MB/sec. or faster.

I would prefer SanDisk.

Thanks for your help.

SanDisk Ultra or Extreme. I prefer CF cards as SD cards are difficult to handle at the best of times and impossible with gloves on.

Anywhere from 8-32 GB, depending on how much you shoot at a time. Bigger cards if you don't have a lot of new pictures to download at any one time will be slower to read as they fill and you go to download the newer files.

I agree w using c.f. cards. Personaly we use Kingston branded cards. I suggest a good USB 3 card reader to go along w it as well.

You don't have to get fast cards with this camera - you can do whatever you want. More precisely, it depends on use, as others have also pointed out.

The link provided by John is very useful. If your usage is demanding and you must deliver, get one of the top-rated CF cards. Otherwise one of the top SD cards get close to the best speeds, are cheap, and are more future-proof.

For SD card designation, there are SDSC, SDHC and SDXC. The only difference between them are capacity limit. SDSC is limted to 2GB which we don't see today. SDHC is up to 32GB. 64GB and above is SDXC. There is no speed or quality associate with these designation.

As for which card I recommend, take Sandisk product for example, I will recommend their Extreme line or the equivalent from other brand. If you look carefully at the package, Sandisk Ultra has spec of 30MB/s transfer speed. It is actually the sequential read speed. The write speed is about 10-12MB/s only. It is a TLC card. Extreme and Extreme Plus can write at 45MB/ and 60MB/s respectively, both read at 95MB/s. They are basically the same MLC card except Extreme Plus use a faster trim setting. I don't believe 45MB vs 60MB makes practical differences. I think ExtremePro grade is entirely not necessary.

As for CF card, your choice is more limited. It is a niche product at the end of its life cycle. I won't spend too much money on them. Take Sandisk line for example again, if 50MB/s is enough, I will recommend Ultra line. Ultra CF is MLC. If you need faster, get faster grade. Capacity wise, it seems 32GB or 64GB is the sweet spot in price point of view.

I've never had an issue with my Transcent Cf or Sd cards. They make them in speeds equal or above the Sandisk line and in many cases are cheaper.
