I am currently using a Windows 8.1 machine and I am having this phenomenon issue where I can get the machine to detect the card for about 1/2-2hrs (no scientific testing applied yet), but if i leave the machine alone for awhile and I insert an sd card into either the built in card reader or the usb connected reader, I get nothing, not even leaving it inserted for several hours. Has anyone noticed this issue and what did you do to fix it other than "buy a Mac" I did that already and hated the OS.

You don't mention the make/model of card reader but I would start with updating the driver. Get it from the OEM if you can as opposed to a Windows update.

I am not certain of the make/model of the built in card reader, However, the multi card reader that i have plugged into the usb port is a Transcend 3.0

I've not used a card reader, but rather the SD slot on the front of my computer.

No issues at all with Windows 8.1 recognizing it...

Just shut up and smile...

Road dog, is your computer native 8.1 or did you upgrade from 8?

Check in the device manager for the USB port for "power saving feature"

"Search" -> type "device manager" and hit enter then go to Uversial Serial Bus and expand that. Right click each one and there should a "Power Management" tab or similar and there is setting to check or un check.

Did this already for all usb drives. didnt help unfortunately.

I did go in tonight under disk drives and i uninstalled the " generic -multi-card usb device" then restarted the computer and so far it has been working, but again, time will tell.

I have not had a problem with my Dell's built in card reader. Windows is current with updates. (Scary)
