I don't do much in the way of tidying, the odd stray detergent bubble and any dust bunnies from the sensor. I find if you add detergent to the water then straight away add the oil then you end up with a mish-mash of oil and bubbles and trying to find decent compositions in that lot is nigh on impossible.
I add a few drops of detergent to the bowl then fill with it water, I now walk away and leave it for approx 30-40 mins, time enough for the detergent bubbles to die down and any remaining bubbles have clung to the inside rim of the bowl leaving the centre more or less clear. I now add the oil and again leave it to rest for 15-20 mins before I start scouring the surface for compositions, if I can't find any then I put my finger in and give it a gentle swirl to create a new canvas.
I'm using a Sigma 105mm macro lens with 30-50mm of extension tubes so the area I'm shooting is quite small.
