I often times end up doing post work to my backgrounds. Usually I do it in Photoshop by creating an adjustment layer (curves, hue/sat, whatever the image calls for) and then masking out the subject so that it just affects the background. There are a lot of tutorials on Youtube in regards to masking and I would definitely recommend learning it as it comes in handy for so many different things. I use masking all the time. Gotta love layers and masking.
