Thanks
On my calibrated monitor it looks more orange than red, just looking at the sunset I saw more red than orange.

This photo was taken when the sun was not showing it had set but still I am getting yellows like the sun hadn't set all the way, the reason I know it is the bush on the right of the photo is the last picture I took, looking at the sunset I saw more red than orange.

If you'd still like to share the raw file for other to edit, you can upload it to dropbox and then share the link. If you don't already have a dropbox account, it's free to sign up.

numbers don't lie. well they do, but not in photoshop. :D back in the early days, before calibration hardware and software was widely available and relatively inexpensive, a prevailing theory of color correction was to do "color correction by the numbers". In photoshop click on the color swatches in the tool palette, that will bring up the color picker, when you move your cursor over the image and click it will display the color under the cursor. Despite what your monitor shows, if the hue is 352 and the saturation is 85, you have red and that cannot be argued. That is an actual sample from your pic by the way.

choosing/testing hue and saturation is just the beginning of this way of color correction. Skin tones should be in a certain range, and there are certain target values for all skin types. White and black point should be set "by the numbers. Is that grey warm grey or cool grey? etc. etc. I still have a book called Professional photoshop 5 the classic guide to color correction, by Dan Margulis, nothing has changed in the nearly 20 years since it's publication. In fact at both of the conferences he held he color corrected an image on a black and white monitor.

a couple more tid bits. The human eye and brain is prone to being fooled when viewing an entire scene, the camera rarely is fooled. There are however instances when colors, particularly sunsets such as this, can have colors that are out of gamut and the camera doesn't know what to do with them.

Thanks for the great info
This is how I was shooting the pictures.
Camera set to AV mode I would take a meter reading, switch to Manual mode and enter the settings I got from AV mode, take a picture, then played around with SS if I thought it looked a little over exposed then I would double the SS 100 to 200, if to dark I would lower SS 100 to 50.
I was using Spot metering, Faithful mode, and tried a few different White Balances, but now that I think about it I was taking a meter reading on the brightest part of the scene, the yellow, I don't know if any of this is the right way, but it is the way I tried it.
Now on my way to check out your link.
Thanks to everyone for your help
Don

I like the first one. The colors in the sky look better to me and the fence in the second one is a minor distraction.

Thanks DGStinner
The picture is at Georgia Powers Plant Hammond, I need to try to find another location to where I can better compose the smoke stacks against the setting sun. The colors I guess looks pastel looking because the sky was a light gray color and any breaks in the gray sky didn't fully break open.

The fence is a distraction, it was the best location I could find so far with out power poles and power lines in the picture. I have been playing around with Google Earth to see if I can find a better location but most of the time when I do a street view I am behind a bunch of trees. Here is a snap shot I took of the location that I was at, matter of fact that is how I found the location, a lot easier than trying to do while traveling in a car at 55 MPH on a highway. :-)

It took awhile but here is the link. Would like for someone to run it through LR or PS so I can have something to compare my LR editing.
Thanks
