Looking for A Good Sharp FF Wide Angle Lens

Hi Everybody, I own the Tokina 11-16mm Wide Angle Lens, Used for awhile on a 600D, but recently I upgraded to a 5D mark II. I am Looking for a Very Good Fullframe, Wide Angle Lens, that is comparable to the Tokina in Quality and Price($490). Auto Focus is not a problem here, so I don't mind going Manual. Thanks!

The Tokina 16-28 2.8 has almost perfect iq like the legendary nikon 14-24
I only sold it as it was flare sensitive due to the bold glas and heavy (fell down once with my tripod)
But sharpness iq wise you cant have better for this price
I switched to the canon 16-35 f4 is as its the best for the moment, no flare and less heavy
Forget about the rest 16-35 2,8 or 17-40 f4, tested them all, those 2 I mentionned are really the best.

very happy with my Tokina 16-28. It has virtually zero distortion from about 22-26 and very manageable distortion at other focal lengths. 2.8 is great for low light and from 24-28 you're kinda almost able to get some subject separation with the lens.

only drawback is the big front element and putting filters on it will be expensive. I use mine for real estate interiors so that's not a problem. The few times i have done daytime landscape work, putting it on a tripod and using my hand to shield the lens from sun worked fine to beat back flare.

Thank you, But I'm Afraid still out of my Price range. I'm Looking for a replacement not a new investment. So I'm thinking something around 400-500$. (Hopefully I can atleast get 400 for my tokina) Have you messed with the Rokinon lenses at all? They have good reviews and are cheeaaaap.

My Apologies, I Searched for NEW lenses. These are in my price range except for the 16-35 for USED. I will check them out thank you!

Tamron 17-35 is pretty good stopped down. Cheap.
Rokinon/Samyang 24mm F1.4 - Crazy good optics. Manual. Not cheap. It's that good.
Rokinon/Samyang 14mm F2.8 - Again, great optics, cheap, manual.
Tokina 16-28 F2.8, very sharp, great optics, search a used one.

Another vote for the Tokina 16-28. Its a little more than your price range, but its worth coughing up a little more money. I've owned both the rokinon 14mm and the Tokina 16-28, and I found the tokina better hands down. Super sharp, great for astrophotography, great IQ.

Thanks a Bunch, Looks like Im Torn Between the Canon 17-40mm F/4 and the Tokina 16-28. The only Concern I have is the Huge Curved Front Element. Is it even possible to get a filter for that?

Thanks for the Reply! My Only Concern is the Huge Bulby Front element. Can you get a filter for that? I am looking for a Wide Angle Lens for Landscapes, so Flares will be a huge problem. I've read that this lens gives very prominent Flares.

Zeiss Distagon 21/2.8 and 15/2.8.

The real problem is that for cheap ultra wide angle zooms you really are better off with a crop camera. To get the necessary coverage, especially for use with a digital camera where sensor design limits the acceptable angle of incidence that will not lead to additional vignetting compared to using film, leads larger and more complex designs. Unfortunately larger heavier more complex designs tend to be much more expensive, if they are actually going to perform. I remember when I first started with photography with an SLR camera (mid 1970's), outside of a fisheye, a 28mm lens was considered to be a really wide lens. There were a few wider lenses about, but not many, and they were very very expensive. So relatively speaking things have got much much better.

Nice Reply, someone had to stand up and shout 'a good WA lens for FF is going to cost more than $490' but other than the Tokina 16-28 the choice isnt huge,
or bite the bullet, break the bank and get the EF 14 or 24 II lenses...........would be worth breaking the bank for...............wort​h every $$$

Just wanted to chime in and say the 17-40L has been great for me so far. It's in your budget, weather-sealed and it's excellent at preventing flare, in my experience. Take a look at the Flickr pool.

I'm in a similar situation, upgraded to FF and have a Tokina 11-16. I purchased a Rokinon 14 thinking that I would use it as my uwa but I'm having second thoughts, here's why...

- Tokina still works @ 16mm (no vignette, like @11-15mm)
- Tokina has AF - which I am finding to be more important to me. I didn't think so at first, but I'm finding the Rokinon hard to use (focus) except when I can stop and take my time.
- Tokina filter thread is 77mm I believe, which is the same as my 24-105, so my CPL, B&W 10 stop and other ND filters will work on both the Tok and 24-105. No getting a threaded filter on the Rokinon...

So I guess what I'm saying is that I don't know if just because you go FF that the 11-16 is obsolete, especially if you've invested in filters. Using it at 16mm might be an option (one I'm still exploring).

I should also say that I really haven't given the Rokinon a fair amount of time to try and get acclimated with it.
