Love these guys, I can watch them for hours.

I'd say they go for a dip, every 10-20 seconds, I don't think I saw them "not" come up with something. There aren't too many land animals that can swim upstream, of a raging river. Fascinating creatures.

I know the focus is on the splash, but I thought it looked cool. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong?

What an intriguing species, Trevor. I just looked them up recently and saw that they are year round residents in your neck of the woods, which makes them even more intriguing. I have heard that there is a small population of them in the border waters between MN and Ontario as well. Great shots!

Yes, they are, although not hugely common. They are found mostly in fast flowing shallow rivers, with high water quality. There are a lot of rivers in Alberta, yet most lack one or more of those qualities. Too deep, to slow, too polluted, or some other unknown factor.

Thanks everyone for the comments. :)

They are unassuming, which is why they don't get lots of press, but believe me they are cool to see in person.

Very cool bird and very nice shots. I also like the Splash shot. The head dunk is great too. :)

Intriguing series Trevor and nicely executed.
I like #'s 1 & 3 for their portrait qualities, 2 & 5 for the humor, and last but not least the final image to make one stare and think! The last looks like a "surfing" image until I realized it's ice
