Hi All,

I am looking to get a TTL flash for my A7 system and have it narrowed down to these two flashes. I would prefer to get the 52 because of the cost and weight savings but need to know if it's powerful enough for events such as an outdoor night setting. I know that it depends on the location and specifics but I am wondering if people think that the power of the 52 is enough to get through most situations?

I'd still get the 64 AF-1, even though I don't care one whit for the touchscreen. Flashguns aren't powerful to begin with, so every ounce helps. And even if you somehow end up with power to spare, you can dial down the power on the larger unit and save battery as well as being able to fire faster due to the shorter recycling time.

I own a Metz 54MZ, which would be negligibly more powerful than the 52AF. Compare guide numbers for a photo taken with a 'normal' lens, rather than the max zoom setting GN (which is what the flash manufacturers tout)...I mean, how often do you think you will shoot flash with a 200mm lens?!

At 50mm coverage angle (ISO100), and at a shooting distance of 31'...

  • Metz 52AF is GN38m or GN125', f/4.03
  • Metz 54MZ is GN40m or GN131', f/4.23, just about 1/6EV brighter!
  • Metz 64AF is GN43m or GN141', f/4.55, just over 1/3EV brighter!

Has that difference in 31' aperture for the 64AF vs. the 52AF failed to impress you?! It does me.

Thanks for that breakdown Wilt. Seems that is a lot of extra $$$ for only 1/3EV in that instance. I think the 64 is prob only worth it if you need the extra electronic features since the extra power in reality is nothing huge.
