Looking for recommendations for an inexpensive <$30 green laser pointer for aiming my camera, laser only, I'll take care of the mount.

Thanks

When I was shopping for a GLP, I was advised that the cheaper Chinese ones may not have the same regulation and IR shielding as some of the more expensive ones. The may be above or below 5Mw. The safety of pointing it at someones eye was a concern for me since I use it for outreach and around kids.

I don't know if these concerns are overblown. I ended up with the Orion version of GLP.

I see the Orion is rated at 3-5mW output, I would imagine just about all these lasers are made in China, the one in my ebay link has the standard Danger warning label saying it is a Class III product which is what I would expect

It should be a Class IIIa (less then 5 mW) otherwise it is just dangerous.
I got a great green laser from wickedlasers.com -> Core. I use that thing professionally for teaching and are very happy with it. No issues about beam stability or getting overheated or any of the other annoying issues I had with cheapies.

Thanks for that website, I think I'm sold on the Core also. :-)

The energy consumption of these greens are quite a bit higher then the normal red ones. I therefore run it with rechargable eneloops and they work great.

After putting this in the shopping cart I saw they wanted $18 to ship and a lead time of 2-4 weeks! Then I realized it's coming from Hong Kong.
Started looking for a US based company that had a decent green laser, lets just say there's not a huge choice out there, finally found
Optotronics (external link) in Colorado, looked like a quality product. Called and talked to someone, they recommended the 30mW for night sky use.
It was a little more then I hoped, but after doing a lot of looking the low end lasers just didn't cut it. It ship 2nd day for $8 and
it is really nice, very bright. Have to make an adapter to mount to my DSLR and telescope.

Sorry to hear that. When I got mine (while ago), shipping was much more reasonable.

30 mW is a lot! Be very careful with your and your customers/visitors eyes. I learned that with <10 mW the blink reflex is fast enough to limit the amount of power damaging the eyes. Above this threshold, it is potentially dangerous.

Got my laser and am very satisfied with the power, made a holder which mounts to my camera hot shoe, pics of that can be seen in the DIY forum, the beam
actually goes much further then what I was able to capture in the attached shot
