I've been working on a Chrome browser extension to customize POTN for the last week or so and thought I'd throw it out there for anyone who might be interested in giving it a try. I've added keyboard shortcuts similar to Gmail to allow me to navigate through the forum (at least the parts that I use most frequently), and I've overridden the color scheme of the site to make it dark.

For anyone that's interested, here's the github repository:

https://github.com/btweller/potn-extension (external link)

It isn't packaged up for release, so you'll have to load it as an unpacked extension...the README.md in the repository has all of the details. I'm going to leave it like that for the time being since things are still changing fairly regularly and I fix little things as I notice them. For those unfamiliar with Git, you can just use the Download As Zip link on the repository page...then unzip the folder on your computer and follow the usage instructions in the README.md file starting at the second bullet point.

For anyone technically inclined, feel free to add functionality and submit pull requests with new features.

Here are a couple screenshots that show the updated color scheme:

Hmmm indeed. :-) Your skepticism serves you well, but I assure you there's nothing malicious in the extension. It doesn't even work on any other domain than https://photography-on-the.net/ per the manifest.json file.

Hopefully someone knowledgeable in javascript will be by shortly to review the code and provide some feedback.

I like the thought of it, but there are some readability problems with it because of the chosen (font) colors.

  • Forum Threads List (screenshot 1): below each thread title the text "by <username> (xx hours ago)" can be seen. The font color and the background color are too similar.
  • Forum Threads List (screenshot 1): at the end of the thread title the page numbers are listed. Some are in grey (e.g. thread "POST YOUR HEADSHOTS! [page 1, last page: page 21]"). The font color and the background color are too similar.
  • Thread Posts List (screenshot 2): the font color of the info below the user's avatar is grey (e.g. "1,787 posts Joined Mar 2005"). The font color and the background color are too similar.
  • Thread Posts List (screenshot 2): the font color of the post number (in the upper right corner of a post) is grey (e.g. "#47"). The font color and the background color are too similar.
  • Thread Posts List (screenshot 2): the green border around the first post feels out of place (and it doesn't fit the other colors used).

Thank you for the feedback...I knocked out most of the items you listed. The green was lifted from the default style's current page indicator in the pagination area...I'm a programmer and I suck at design, so I really have no idea what a better color would be. :-/ It basically provides context as to which thread/post is currently selected...the main reason for this is that if you press the 'o' key, it opens the selected thread...without a visual indicator, you would be guessing as to which thread would be opening.

I use the extension primarily for the keyboard shortcuts that it adds for me...I spend most of my days in IDEs, terminal windows and text editors, and I've grown accustomed to having light text on dark background, so that's where I'm coming from with the color scheme. I put in the ability to disable the CSS styles by using the t+d combination (toggle dark)...it stores your choice so that any subsequent tabs that you open retain your choice, and whenever you come back to the site it remembers your last setting.

At some point, I'd like to add an options dialog to enable/disable functionality (keyboard shortcuts are always on, for example, and you can't pick and choose which shortcuts to use, short of commenting them out in the code), but I've got a ton of other things demanding my attention.

Anyway, thank you for the feedback...here are some updated screenshots:

I don't see how this requires authorization. It's something that happens on the client side, it has no effect on the POTN forum (server side). It's comparable to people who use Adblock or a custom CSS file.

Interesting. I'll follow this and see how it progresses.

Just remember: bad Javascript can mess things up (I'm not saying you have that, but still), and untouched DOM is an integral element for bug-free functionality.

So here's the official disclaimer: any AMASS bugs reported by people using this (or any other similar) extension will be ignored.

Yes, that's true, but it would mess things up on the client side as far as I know. No harm would be done to the server side. I'm not using the extension by the way (and also a Firefox user here). Also a logical official disclaimer from your side.
