thank you, no it was not natural light, the backlighting kind of was, it was a giant window, but the rest of the lighting was a Profoto B1 at 80% power going in from the left of the shot, and a Canon 600ex flash at i think 1/64 power as a fill on the right

Couple (newbie) questions if I may...

Note: I really like the picture and took some time to take a good look at it. These questions come from untrained curiosity, not criticism.

1. The catchlights in his eyes seem pretty low and far forward to me, for the line of light cast across the right side of his face. And if the B1 was creating that catchlight and it is as far forward as I think, how is there no shadow from his nose on the left side of his face? Or, is it there, just hidden by his nose?

2. No catchlight from the 600ex?

3. So close to not cropping any hair, left elbow, and right hand/ little finger. Was it a conscious decision to crop them?

4. Is that shot wide open?

Thanks

Ok,

1)the catchlight in his eyes was the 600ex, i wanted it to have just enough power to get some light in the eyes, and light in the shadows, the light it self was almost against the wall, there was maybe 2ft or less between the glass and the wall in this shot. the B1 was the key light providing the main light source for the image, using a beauty dish. the 600ex is significantly less powerful than the B1, so i really only use it to fill when needed

2)answered above, the light in his eyes was the 600ex

3)it was a bit accidental, i was as far back as i could get with the framing, would've liked maybe another 6inches to move back to get more headroom and handroom

4)no its shot with a 150mm lens at f/8, ISO 50 and shutter speed of 1/400

Really appreciate the answers! After reading what you wrote about the lighting and looking at the photo again, I can see it now. Thank you.

How did you trigger the 600EX and the B1 together?

Using a pocket wizard to trigger the 600ex, and the slave function on the B1 to trigger that

Thank you!
And the other way around is it possible in some way? I mean, put the 600EX in slave mode.

I don't believe so, i know that i can trigger the B1 with the flash of anything from a 50$ speed light all the way to up to multi-thousand $ strobes. the 600ex requires a radio or another canon flash to trigger

Is that Phil Burke? Looks a lot like him and if it's him, he is on one of my favorite TV shows.

i don't know who the person is, but it is a very impressive portrait.
i like the background
i personally like the first one better because of his facial expression.
but both are quite impressive - in regards to the detail and the colors.
very nice.
thanks for sharing also the lighting set up.
