Transferring photos directly to an external hard-drive?

This is a similar (but different) question to Methodical - who posted a week ago...

In a few weeks I am going to the Everglades for a bird photography trip. In the past, I have brought my laptop computer, along with my card reader. I would usually transfer and save my photos on my computer.

This time, I don't own a laptop. I was wondering if there is a way to transfer my photography from my camera directly to an external hard-drive. What is the best option for this?

I own a Canon 7D, which uses CF cards.

Thanks so much for your help!

You mean a hard drive on some device, right? Not just a hard drive itself. Canon does not have any software that can interface to a drive directly. You need to have something like a tablet or phone that can control the drive or has a drive built into it.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Oh, I see. I thought it was wishful thinking that I could just go straight into a hard-drive. I do have an iPhone. Will that work?

Thanks for your response!

I do not know, if this thread is still alive, but I would like to share my own experience with portable storage I used for three weeks travel in China. My backpack was full of lenses, cables, chargers, tripod and so on ... I wanted my bag to be as light as possible, keeping in mind walking all day long and China is not flat country. I was not going to take laptop in my bag - too heavy, but desperately needed a lot of memory space. I mean a LOT! Raw and video files. So, I bought Sanho HyperDrive COLORSPACE UDMA2 Backup Storage Device: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …lSearch=yes&sts=pi&ipp=48 (external link). Then I bought 1TB compatible hard drive. Put HD in the HyperDrive - it was easy to do. By using this device I did not have any limitations on how many shots to take and how long video to shoot. I could not believe to myself how good it worked out for me. Hole day I was using CF cards (two/three of them, depending on size). At the end of the day I uploaded CF cards to the storage and same cards were ready for the next day shooting. After I got back home, I uploaded all files into my regular storage on computer and additional portable HDs. I simply love this HyperDrive for portability, ease to use and lots of additional features it has. I greatly recommend it as very portable and light storage.

Check out the Macally SyncBox. It may do what you need. You can find them on ebay and, I think, Amazon.
