unfortunately a few months ago i had to sell my t4i for financial reasons. i do regret it but it was something i had to do.

I was looking at something similar and i found some refurb sl1's with the kit stm lens for under $400. Does that seem good or should i keep looking around

I wouldn't mind a 60d or something similar. but that was the best deal i've found

Heya,

What do you need from your camera body? And what do you need from the lens(es)?
Do you print? If so, how large?
Really comes down to what you shoot or want to shoot.

The SL1 is nice, but very small. That's great for some. But maybe you wanted a dSLR that can be gripped later? The STM lenses are quite good for their cost but maximum aperture is their biggest limitation (if you're ok with that).

I would also throw out there that depending on your needs, you could get away with a less expensive camera and focus on a few good pieces of glass. But it really depends on your needs from the body.

Very best,

what i would shoot with my t4i is mostly landscapes/nature. street art, and sometimes food for my chef friends and their gatherings/dinners. thats why i leaned towards the sl1 because its similar in specs. i've never shot video really, just handheld and it came out shakey. but i just do it as a hobby and favors for friends events sometimes. never thought about adding a grip. i probably never would. and I don't print. if i ever did it would just be normal size, nothing large. most of what i shoot i just put up online for friends to see

Ok,

Depending on your budget, I would actually take a step back since this is for online sharing, and instead, get some more glass.

Canon 40D
Canon XSi

Either of those, used, would be excellent ($100~150 ea). More resolution than is needed for your purposes (and you could still print if you wanted!). All the little features you'd need for using Live View and setting up landscapes, etc. Can be gripped in the future if you feel the need (sometimes its nice when using live view heavily for landscape or long exposure).

(For the street stuff, food, low light, tight of depth of field, etc)
Sigma 30 F1.4 (non-ART) (used)
Canon 40 F2.8 STM (new or used)
Canon 50 F1.8 II (new or used)
Tamron 28-75 F2.8 (used)

(For landscape and travel/walk around/street)
Canon EF-S 10-18 STM (used/refurb/new)
Canon EF-S 18-55 STM (used/refurb/new)

And a tripod.

Alternative:

Consider a used EOS-M with a 22mm F2 pancake lens. Does everything above, with a single unit. Very small and compact. Excellent sharp lens. Same quality as the T4i, in a little package that is mirrorless. Can be had for like $250~300 for a package used.

Very best,

Consider the fantastic 5D Classic. Its full frame with great IQ. Colors are really nice too. You can buy one for $500 or less. Then save up for a Canon 17-40 F4 L. You will have a full one pro rig with only about 1K invested.

I bought this rig used for my daughter and am looking for another for my girlfriend. Its just the best value that I see out there and would probably suit your needs for years to come.

Must my .02:)

Canon 1DX II, 1DX, 11-24 F4 L, 100 F2.8 L, 16-35 F2.8 L II, 17-40 F4 L, 24-70 F2.8 L II, 24-105 F4 L II, 70-200 F2.8 L II

The SL1 is very similar in spec and features to your old T4i only in a smaller package. If you were happy with the T4i then you should find the SL1 very suitable.

If possible - try to handle the SL1 to see how it feels in your hands. Best Buy has them on the self normally. I found it awkward to handle even though I like using the EOS-M. The SL1 to me just does not handle as easy as the full size bodies. For whatever reason for me I just could not get my fingers comfortable to using it.

The 60D or any of the Rebels would be great. MalVeaux gives great advice as he always does.
