A few days ago I shared some images of the female Pileated Woodpecker frequenting my backyard. Today I was in position when the male showed up about 15 feet away. I'll apologize up front for clipping the tail as I was afraid any camera movement might scare him off. I'll promise to do better next time :-)

4. After leaving his perch near me he went to a deadfall Pine tree about 90 feet away and began enlarging a hole created previously by Red-bellied woodpeckers.

5. He excavated and cleared for a little while.....

6. .....and poked his head way in as if to check out the depth of the cavity. I can only hope that this might turn into a nesting cavity this next Spring.

So that's the male Pileated I promised you and I hope you liked him. It's actually the 1st opportunity I've ever had to photograph a male, only females before. I will keep my eyes open and fingers crossed on the nesting cavity and keep you posted. Thanks for having a look, and please feel free to leave behind your thoughts by way of comments, critiques, etc.

Outstanding shots. If they choose this tree as a nesting site you will be set for amazing images and looks like they will have a porch roof over their entrance.

Almost heaven, down in Georgia. I don't know that you could improve on these, short of directing the bird into a tree 5 feet farther away, Steve. What a terrific setting you have....he clearly thinks so too, as he scouts out the new home for his family. Let's hope so, as I can easily picture three young ones hanging out that hole .

Great shots! I would love the opportunity to try to get photos half this good. Clipped tail is no biggie. I can't count all the poor birds I've taken pictures of that appear to have only half a wing on one side while flying....

Wow...amazing group you have here Steve! The clarity on those close ups are something to be proud of...good luck on a Spring Fling of the Pileated variety!
