I've not found a good place near Luke AFB but then I don't spend much time in the west valley. I seem to recall that you could get a pretty good view across the flower fields west of the base but they're probably all houses now.

Just don't go snooping around the salvage yards accross the street. They're private property and most of them don't like "airplane nuts."

Those rose fields are still there and are going to stay. My wife boards the horse very near there. I'm looking forward to what Hatch finds out!

He did tell me the pilot complained about it.

?! Say again? The pilot complained about what? Were you using a flash at night? Are you sure you weren't parked on an active taxiway? <j/k>

Weird...

No this was at the Yuma Marine Base. I was in the county fair grounds parking lot just north of the base. I was trying out my new 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L that day. I really thought they were going to take me away. The Yuma police even showed up.

I agree, very strange! If in the daytime that's impressive sight :).

No it was about high noon on a Sunday... I asked how he even knew I was there and he said the pilot reported me.

Yowser! Glad you weren't incarcerated! I need to try that lens someday. I have really wanted to try a 100-400L but the darn L fever might have me for sure.

Ok, now this is even weirder because while KYUM has an active military presence, it's also a public airport. I've landed there myself. I've carried a camera ON airport property and photographed planes ON the ramp.

Good thing you weren't shooting with a "Bigma." They might have shot back.

I think he was flying a Harrier. I was in the County fair parking lot just North of the base the lot was empty so there was nothing between him and I. There was 4 of us outside the vehicle taking pictures with 2 camera's. We looked like your adverage dumb out of towners. We were coming back from deep sea fishing.

Maybe I was just in the wrong place at the right time. Maybe they were testing something. I just know he told me you can only take pictures of Military planes at air shows. Growing up in Mesa and having property out by Williams we use to do it all the time back in the day.

Too bad you got hassled. It's definately a very different world now...

Being a pilot myself, I'm accutely aware of the need for airport security. However, it never ceases to amaze me that "security" doesn't realize what a benefit having aviation-minded photogs around could be.

We have trained eyes, long lenses and we'd see something odd probably before they did.

Hell, I've had to point out to airline staff at Sky Harbor that someone walked away and left a bag un-attended. If I hadn't, I doubt they would have even noticed.

*Sigh* Yup, it's definately a different world...

Oh, before I forget...I guess I'm going to a wedding on saturday night...I really hope I make it home early enough for me to get some sleep so I can get up and make the drive all the way to boyce thompson. I'll be using my camera at this wedding so I gotta remember to clear off some memory cards and charge my batteries too...or else I will just have to sleep in and also get ready for my move :-)
so I hope I make it sunday morning! :-)
