My question, is the bird life on the islands of the Eastern Caribbean worth me taking my 150-500 lens this time of year?
I'm open for suggestions as it would be nice to travel lighter. Any birds I see will most likely be new ones for me so I'm hesitant about leaving any gear at home.

Any time I go far from home and have a chance to photograph birds I take it. I've only been to the Caribbean once in summer (August) and found lots of interesting birds. I would have been very frustrated if I have not have a long lens on the trip. Of course you could get lucky and be close enough to an Antillean Crested Hummingbird to get the shot with a 250 mm lens...

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

But with a 500mm lens you don't have to be as close or crop as much of the image.

Thanks George for the reply with link, I've decided to take all my gear especially after seeing some of your images. We will be at the Grand Turks and I see you have several images from there, I've never seen any of those birds before and where I'm from any shore birds are a rarity of course. I now have a mission to see if I can locate some of the birds you were able to capture.
I'm going to split my gear into two bags and have one of my Grandsons carry one camera with a couple lenses, I will then be able to carry the rest. Right now with my gear in one bag it would be too heavy if for some reason it were to get weighed while flying, don't want to take the chance and don't want to leave anything at home.
Would love to get a shot of the Crested Humming Bird and Black Necked Stilt.

When I went to St Lucia a few years ago I certainly found a lot of birds to photograph around the hotel and further afield. Including an incredibly tame male Antillian Crested Hummingbird that frequently let me get closer than the MFD of my 100-400 (1.8m). After re-doing my website I don't have any photos to hand, just this one:

And a video https://vimeo.com/31107950 (external link)

Here's a pdf from BirdLife that gives some insight in to the island as a birding location: pdf (external link).

Thanks Paul for your reply, that is a beautiful shot of the Antillian Crested Hummingbird.
After watching the video I was surprised to see a Hummingbird sit still for that long, I may get a chance to get a capture of my own.
I appreciate the pdf link too, seeing some interesting facts there. I'm not very good with research so these tips are of great help. Hopefully I will have some images to share by mid July from the Caribbean.
