Anyone recommend a good flash unit?

Hi all. I'm tired of red eye on my photos! I've been taking indoor people shots with the built in flash unit. It works fine for "normal" lenses, but when I uses a 200mm zoom or greater, I get the dreaded red eye.

I assume the flash is too direct and I need to bounce the flash off the ceiling. What product do you recommend for a Rebel XT?

try any Canon speedlites like, 420/550 or 580.
I am sure you tried the red eye feature on your camera turned on.

I like my Sigma EF 500 DG Super.

Its got just about every feature the Canon 550 has (minus maybe some build quality) and cost only $200 brand new from sigma4less.com :D

Sigma here also, paid $240 at a local camera store. Can't compare the build qualitu as I don't have any Canon units but there is nothing wrong with the build quality of the Sigma in my mind. I highly recommend it just make sure you get the DG model.

I just got my 430EX, but I've been very happy with it so far.

I gotta suggest either the 550EX or 580EX. They have more power than the 430EX and bouncing really depleats the light. Also consider the LumiQuest 80-20 Pocket Bouncer (I have one) http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ghType=categoryNavigation (external link) , it helps prevent 'raccoon eyes' from bouncing the light. BTW, there has been several posts about members having sync problems with the Sigma flash.

I've had the Sigma EF 500 DG Super and now have the Canon 430EX. Both are good tho' the Sigma is much better value IMO. Depends what you want to do. My flash needs are very basic so the Canon does me now.

One more vote for the Sigma 500 Super, mine have been performing flawlessly for several years, bought two for the price of one Canon 550.

Perhaps at the time the Sigma was half the price of Canon's 550EX but currently, in the U.S., it's like 70% of the 550EX's cost. The Canon offers several custom functions not available with the Sigma. The Canon has a slightly higher GN. The Canon zooms to cover a slightly wider field than the Sigma. Sigma's 'save energy timeout mode' will not work when used in multi-flash setups, Canon's does. The 550EX accepts external high voltage packs, the Sigma does not. The build quality of the Canon is higher than that of the Sigma. These issues may, of course, not be of any importance to some but important to others. I'm speaking of the Sigma 500 Super DG here. The older non-DG model will not sync with all Canon digital cameras that use E-TTL.

I use the Promaster 5550 with excellant results. It's worth a look.

Nothing "perhaps" about it, at that time, the price in Canadian dollars was exactly half.

Always worth a look at FM when the choice is tight.
