Richard D'Oyly Carte bought the island in 1890 to build an exclusive additional feature for the Savoy Hotel, which is downstream in London and was owned by him at the time. He never did manage to get planning permission for that so built a private house, extending the island in the process. The foot bridge was built much later. He was the one who brought together Gilbert and Sullivan. The house was unused for some time but is now being renovated by a new owner.

Triggs Lock on the Wey Navigation. The Wey Navigation opened in 1653 and the lock house dates from this time.
