Love the bird and the name!I like the pics too, I see you have enhanced the saturation but the effect is pleasing to the eye, good work.

Thanks 2n10 & 2slo,
They are colorful birds, but this time of year the colors dull out a little. Just wanted to make them pop again. These woodpeckers are usually shy, so I couldn't believe this one stayed on the truck of a tree about chest high and let me take about 30 pics from only about 20 feet away. Very fortunate to get this one.
Like I heard a photo friend of mine a few days ago who said, "Bird photography depends quite a bit on luck."

Very nicely accomplished on these Winter visitors Joel!
I especially like the posture/pose in the 2nd image as it shows his head a little better. I also think the eye is in better focus. Well done!

Nice. The first time I ever saw one of these it was being eaten on a window ledge by a male Peregrine falcon in Dayton, OH. I don't see too many sapsuckers around here, but sometimes find their tell-tale trees.

Zach--C&C is welcome on my photos

Beekeeper,
In East Tennessee they are quite common. Since I first started getting interested in woodpeckers I notice them all the time. We also are covered up with Downy WP's, and we have quite a lot of Red-bellied WP's. I just took a pic of a Red-bellied today. It didn't turn out that good since we are overcast and he was fairly high in a tree. I did get a really good pic of a Peleated WP last summer, so they are common here too, but not as common as the others I mentioned.
I have also seen a Hairy WP which looks like a Downy, but it is bigger. There are Red Headed WP's here too, but I have yet to see one, and I am looking.

I like taking pics of all kinds of birds, but woodpeckers are some of my favorites.

Great captures. They are indeed shy - I have tried numerous times to capture one here and thus far, my best shot is him peeking out from behind the tree. You did very well.

All I want is just a little more than I'll ever have.
