I'm looking to get a budget telephoto zoom in the next few months. I've kind of narrowed it down between the Canon 55-250 STM or the Tamron 70-300 VC. I'm leaning towards the Canon because from what I've read the Tamron is very heavy.

Are you aware of any new lenses that will be coming out soon in this price range that I could throw in the mix?

The 55-250 II is excellent considering the cost. You struggle to do better for the money.

The 55-250 STM (not the II) would be an excellent choice. Check Canon Refurbished. The lens is usually in stock there.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Based on this thread, I just ordered one from the Canon refurb store. Total cost (including a Canon hood) was $236.00. I didn't have a long lens to use on my trust 450D, (other than 200mm F 2.8L), so this should be a nice setup.

I don't think I'd classify one and a half pounds as "very heavy"! Yes that is double the weight of the 55-250 stm but still not "very heavy". Sure you were not reading about the tamron 70-200 VC??

Personally I'd go with the tamron 70-300 VC. Its a lens that will work on a crop of full frame camera, it's slightly faster through out the zoom range (I.e. At 200mm the 55-250 is at f5.6 where the 70-300 is at f5.0), you get 50mm more reach (but honestly not a huge difference from 250 and 300), slightly better IQ (in my opinion. Haven't seen test charts of each, just what I've seen from using each), comes with a hood, and you get a 6 year warranty instead of 1.

Plus it's only $150 more then the canon 55-250 (only $100 difference after the mail in rebate going on right now)
