I am not sure if this is something that y'all will find interesting since it's been so long since I posted the original post, but... :)'

Well, to be perfectly honest, I am going to have to say that I am the cause of my lens falling off of my camera, that's all I can say about it really, nothing else can explain it.
I have mentioned that I didn't think it could be me because I was always checking to make sure the lens was on there snug, and every time I have checked it, it was, but, this was with my 1D mkIV and my Canon 400 f/2.8 lens, but NOW, I am having the same thing going on with my 7D mkII and my Tamron 150-600mm... So, that tells me that it has to be me.
Here's something that I know for a fact I do, or, did do, on my Tamron and 7D II I would loosen the ring on my lens so I could turn it while it was on a monopod so that things would be level, which really helps, but, I saw that the ring's semi-snug fit on the lens was actually twisting the lens. More than likely too, I was guilty of (somehow) pressing the lens release button, I make sure a thousand times a day to NOT do that, but it's the ONLY explanation I can come up with that makes sense. I wish that I could catch myself actually doing it, then I would know for sure what the deal is, and when I say that I "check it", I mean that I grab the lens and twist it to check it, not press the lens release... :)
Now that I have my 1D mkIV back from Canon, really, I don't use it, I love the 7D mkII and the Tamron quite a bit, so it is the one that I pick up, I do bring the 'old' stuff with me still, but it will stay in the truck.
In case it matters...
I had unsuccessful Carpal Tunnel surgery last Fall on my left wrist, and my right wrist is about the same, meaning, I can't hold what I once could, I can't do a lot of things now because of that, there's nothing at all wrong with my 1D mkIV and 400mm, it's just too heavy now. That also means that I will have to sell my motorcycle, something that I would not think I would ever have to do. I can't ride it with my wrists the way they are.

So, there you have it, and as before, if I do find HOW I am doing this, I will let y'all know, I'm not an idjit, but I must be guilty of doing stupid stuff! :-P

Good to hear you like the 7d2 and Tamron combo so much.
I'm looking into a Sigma 150-600. We shall see. I may be better off with a 7d2 and my current 100-400 though.

Post up some stuff!

Hey Jeremy,

Yeah, I really like the lens and the 7D mkII, I am considering either getting a Sigma 150-600mm S though, OR... I might be swayed into a Canon 100-400mm mkII, Or... I was just looking at a Sigma 120-300 f/2.8, you can do amazing things with that last one, especially with either a 1.4 or a 2.0 converter.
I really do like the Tamron 150-600mm though, it does good, but, I have to go way up on my ISO's to get a good BiF shot, so I am not happy about that. A lot of people say that they think that going high on their ISO's is not a bad thing, but for me, I can see the differences in a bird's feathers, so I am disappointed in the Tamron in that respect. Really, I am not sure I could get rid of the Tamron 150-600mm though.
I have not touched my Canon 400mm f2.8 since I got my Tamron and 7D mkII, I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing... :-)

We'll see... :)

To be honest, I have gotten bored with shooting for some reason, plus, we've had so much rain, AND... now it's hot, also most of the places I like to go are still flooded, and they're closed, so I haven't shot much at all. heheheh

Good luck on whatever it is that you end up with, it's not an easy choice sometimes, at least for most of us, I'd have to go with a new 7D mkII, I mean, I like mine more than I do my 1D mkIV, I might be crazy, or, it's a good camera... heheh I know what they say about 'glass' before a new camera, but still, I am so impressed with the new camera I can't believe it.

Thanks, Jeremy!

Randy,

Glass before body is typically what they say but I have good glass.
I could use a body that shoots clean 1600 ISO files and usable 3200 ISO files. If I could get that I could really get some good stuff.

Processing the 7d and 7d2 files is a bit different compared to the 1 d4 so be aware that it CAN shoot high ISO (3200) it just takes a few different steps than the 1d4.

We will see. I'm not quick to purchase things.

I feel your pain with not shooting due to weather. It's hot and humid here right now. I don't even want to go outside. Overnight lows are between 79-82 degrees. The second the sun comes up the temp rises. Out sunrise is 5 am. Crazy no daylight savings changes.
Take a short trip somewhere if you can. It should re spark your interest. I'm heading to San Diego in a week. That should be fun.

Yeah, I agree, in your particular case, I believe that a 7D mkII is the better idea. I have not used a 7D mkI before, but like you, I am sure that we all have read about the noise problems it has. The 7D mkII is so good it's unreal, I now use a higher ISO than I would normally, without any thought. I can shoot 1D mkIV shots that are high ISO, but really, since I mainly shoots small birds with a lot of detail, I usually don't go that route. Same with the 7D mkII also, but, rather than not take the shot, I will now, for whatever reason, I really can't say why I will with the new camera. :) I have done a lot of tests on both, they both do very well, I just happen to like the 7D mkII better than the 1D mkIV right now, maybe because I hate myself for letting it drop. heheh
I do want to say that ALL of my tests I have done on both cameras are not that scientific, I just do what I feel might work in my particular case, and some that I gleaned from the forums.

Yeah, when I said it was hot here, I really did forget who I was talking to, I apologize for that. :) I have been in Arizona in July riding through on my motorcycle, so I know that it's hot, but, to live there, that is something else entirely.

I will take a trip, I just need to get myself together, I haven't been 'me' lately, I just want it to be at least Fall! heheh

Good luck on the choice you make, hopefully you'll keep your 7D for a back-up, those really come in handy. :)

I have come to redeem myself... :)

It turns out that I was not at fault, I found out what was happening when my lens would separate from my camera, it is the lens, for sure.
What is happening is the two become separated because the lens itself has three flanges that are bent, they are only slightly bent, but visibly bent. So, that is why it won't stay on, even when my finger/hands are really away from the 'eject button'.

If you look at the image above that ALYX posted and look at the three inner flanges on the camera, that is what the lens itself hooks up to, that is what is bent on my lens. It must've been dropped at some point, I don't remember doing it, but I did buy it used. It didn't use to do that though, so I don't know how, but it's bent.
The good news is, I 'think' that it'd be a quick and easy fix, hopefully just ordering the part and remove and replace the old. That is, IF they do that on a lens, I have not heard of Canon doing that, but it's possible. It'd be a real pain to ship the 400mm f/2.8 to them (12lbs) just for that, especially when I could replace the part.

Anyway, I am 100% positive that is the problem, yesterday while I was out shooting it happened to me 3 times in a row, with 5 minutes, and I knew my fingers were not the reason. It turns out that if you (even slightly) pull the camera away from the lens and you left hand is close to the area where the eject button is, it allows that bent area to 'let go' of the flange. I can attempt to do that on any other area and it won't do it, but when I place my left hand anywhere in that area, it allows the camera to eject.

So, I know the cause, now to see about a fix.

I'm happy to know that I am not the idjit I thought I was, well, not so much anyway. :)

I'm sure that alcohol (done right) can me a difference.

Are you sure it wasn't alcohol that caused the drop in the first place? :-P

So how can it be a bent mount on your 400 2.8 if it is happening with this completely different combination ???

Are you sure this thread isn't a bit of a wind up???

Really, I don't know what to think, but it is damaged, but shoots fine other than that.

No, I was wrong on that, I was at one point mixing up my cameras and lenses, and I got mixed up during the process. I know that NOW sounds crazy, but I can assure you that I now have a bent part on my lens, and it is only with the Canon 400mm f/2.8...
I tried it out on all my stuff, thinking I would find an answer, my answer at that time was just plain ol' confusion, no drugs or alcohol involved, switching back and forth bent my brain, I think... :)
Actually too, a friend mentioned that I had the same thing happen on my new 7D mkII, so I am thinking I may have gone with her opinion, I really can't say, but I was wrong in writing what I did, I know that.

Anyway, case solved, even if you think I am making this up. :)

What do you mean by "wind up"? I'm unfamiliar with that - is it a UK term?
