Hello! I'm going to be adding another lens to my collection and have been saving for the canon 24-70 f2.8. I shoot weddings and portraits, mainly with my canon 85 f1.8 And 6D. Today I discovered the sigma art line, and am considering getting the 35 f1.4 and 50 f1.4 instead of the canon 24-70. Would that be a better choice, to go along with my 85?

It depends. If you're looking at the Mk2 of the 24-70/2.8 the question gets even harder given the fantastic optical performance of that lens. IMO, the things you need to think about are

- Do you prefer a zoom over primes or can you cope with only primes and no zoom?
- Can you cope with "only" f/2.8? (Most people can with the low light IQ of current bodies)
- The AF of 35 Art is reputed to be a bit hit and miss in varying light sources (I don't have an issue on my Nikon but most problems I've read are on Canon bodies). For some people this has even continued as a problem after calibrating with the Sigma dock
- I have also seen the odd AF complaint with the 50 Art.

I have both of these two Art lenses and love them. IMO, they are the pinnacle of their focal lengths - the 50 only being bettered by the Otus (others will prefer the look of the Canon, Nikon or Zeiss competitors though). However, if you are looking for absolute reliability in AF, the L's (35L, 50L and 24-70 Mk2 L) will be a slightly safer bet.

If you shoot weddings I'd get the 24-70 first. I think the flexibility the zoom offers can't be beat in that situation.

If you're shooting and getting paid I'd get both.

24 70 no doubts about. As you may know. There are some kinds of situations where it's better to get unnoticed. But most important be quick. Changing between too many lens could be slow. Or quick but dangerous for equipment.

I would get the Sigma 35/1.4 art. Not both. Play with the 35/85 combo for a while and decide later if you really need the 50.

If you shoot weddings, I'd get a 24-70. Consider the Tamron f/2.8. It has stabilization, unlike the Canon MkI.

I also have the Sigma 35 f/1.4; Very sharp lens, and well built, but I rarely use it. If I had bought the 24-70 first, I never would have gotten it.

Do both (more or less).

Get the 24-70 F4 ($760ish)
Get the 35mm F2 IS ($550ish)
Pocket the change or get an 85mm.
