I have created a mask and clicked OK which now takes me back to CS5 see image attached - how do I now paste the cut out onto another image? I have tried selecting all and copying to the clipboard but when I paste on the new backround image it includes the original image before it was masked. Thanks in advance for any help.

There are a few ways, but the best would be to save that as a PSD, and close it.

Then open the other photo, and File>Place to choose this photo.

Have both this current file and new file open (easier to see if arranged with tiled vertically). Then just drag the entire masked layer over to the new document and let go of the mouse button. It will bring the picture and it's mask over.

Thanks, that is what I was trying to do but it does not seem to work (although I am sure I did this a few months ago and it worked). Do I need to deselect the backround layer as in my pic above

Another simple way is to right-click on the layer you want to copy and choose Duplicate Layer from the menu. In the dialogue box click on the drop down under Destination and choose New or any other open document..

No, you don't have to deselect the background layer. I just tested it and it worked as it should...

When you're dragging the cutout/masked layer over to the other image, you have to click and drag from inside the image (e.g. click on the bird and drag it), DON'T try to drag the whole layer from the thumbnail in the Layers pane.

That still gets me about half the time :/

Clicking the actual layer in the layer panel will work. You can click and drag the thumbnail, the area to the right of the mask, pretty much anywhere except the mask thumbnail as that will only copy over the mask.
