Apologies if posted in incorrect section, if so - mods feel free to move it.

I would like to know what recommendations are out there for a "decent" UV filter with diameter of 105mm - this is for my new lens I am planning to buy, the Sigma 150-600 Sports lens.

I currently use the Hoya Pro 1 (77mm) on my Canon 400mm 5.6L which has zero impact on the sharpness, but cannot seem to find a 105mm in the shops here in South Africa.

All suggestions welcome

P.S I know there are those that HATE the use of UV filters but I like the way it keeps salt creep of the front glass....

thanks

I donĀ“t "love" UV- or protection filter for all time use. But your enviroment is a good reason to use a kind of protection filter.
But it seems that there is no such high precision consumer filter in that size :-/

You have to take care to buy a filter with very high surface quality - it should be very exact flat, about 300nm or such form tolerance. I reccomend comparison images with/without filter for sharpness and bokeh - sometimes bad fitler quality could bee seen in the bokeh!

They seem to exist in the States based on a quick google search; Amazon, B&H, Adorama, etc.. Even Sigma makes one so why not ask the vendor that sold you the lens?

Check 2filter.com. My preference in filter brands is B+W (preferably MRC Kaesemann). I also hear good things about Marumi filters. Don't put inferior glass on the front of your lens.;-)a

I have the 72mm MRC version of this one: http://www.2filter.com …V_Haze_SC_010_Filter.html (external link)

It's cheaper at B&H (and probably Adorama), but I've had 2filter.com match prices before. They (2filter.com) are an authorized dealer and get their product direct from Schneider Optics (makers of B+W). B&H often get theirs from other sources.

The MRC (multi-resistant coated version) gets pretty pricey for a filter your size:

thanks all for the replies ..
I have approached the supplier that is providing my lens (expected delivery is this Friday :))

They are trying to source the Sigma UV filter, but agree, I am looking for the highest quality else I will take the risk without it ...

Heya,

Marumi makes a multi-coated UV filter that is 105mm that is as good as the $180+ B+W, and equivalents. For a fraction of cost. If you care.

Very best,

Managed to source a Sigma UV filter that has a high rating (and price I might add) - so now to get out there and shoot!
Appreciate all the input....
