Makes sense. Canon's 50 1.4 could use an update similar to the 35 IS.

I hope it's a IS lens, to match some of their wider IS primes.

If a new 50mm is coming, i have a feeling it will be a ~$400 f/2 IS to continue the 35, 28 and 24 line of IS primes.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

Considering how well the 35 does at f/2.0 and that the 50/1.4 really needs to be stopped down to f/2.0 anyway it might not be such a bad thing. Not ideal though

I think a 50 1.4 IS priced a little less than the Sigma ART lens would sell like hotcakes if the quality is the same as the 35 IS.

Well, now they are saying it is a new 50 1.8 for sure.

50 1.8 STM is perfect! Exactly what I want. Won't cost more than 50 1.4 probably, and will be sharper.

My guess is its a 50mm f1.8 IS USM which will fit with the 24 and 35mm IS USM. Which is amazing, and Id love to replace my nifty fifty with a proper mechanical model

Canon's best non L 70-300 is currently selling for $650. The Tamron 70-300 VC is selling for $450 and currently has a $50 rebate I think. It is optically superior to Canon's best non L 70-300 in all published tests and built like a tank. It's one of the best values around. If this new 70-300 is $650 (or more) and not clearly better than the Tamron, it's a waste of Canon's time.

It won't be IS. It will be a STM without IS.

What are you basing that on? Judging by the latest non L EF prime lenses, Canon is aiming at video and that hints at IS. Also, a rumor about the 50 was around a couple of years ago when the 35 IS was released.

There have been STM lenses, but mainly zoom lenses and mainly EF-S lenses. Take into account the build quality of those lenses and I'd sooner think that the 50mm f/1.8 will be replaced by an STM lens than the 50mm f/1.4. STM lenses seem to have been aimed at a different market than the IS USM primes.

I think could be interesting if the build quality and the bokeh improve respect the other Canon 50mm ... (naturally put aside the 1.2 edition).
