Hey Ron, (almost feel like I'm typing to myself) :-P

They're basically identical, the T4i pre-dating the T5i. I picked up the T4i about the time they released the T5i, because it cost less. Both have swivel and touch screens which is nice. I've yet to use mine for video. Just depends on if you want new, or used really.

I could be wrong but I had read the only difference between them is on the t5i the mode button rotates 360 degrees so if you get to the last position on the dial then to go back to the first you just turn once more, on the t4i you have to turn the mode dial in reverse clicking through each position to end up back at the start.

There are no differences in processor, image quality or the like though apparently the t5i lets you view creative filters in real time while the t4i has you add the creatve filter after taking the photo (not sure this is of any concern, I think most people would do creative filters in software later anyway).

Basically they are the same camera. I believe the t5i typically came with the newer 18-55mm STM lens while the t4i came with the standard 18-55mm kit lens - STM has better focus speed I believe.

I have the t4i and use it for family photos, vacations and while I have not tried shooting many birds with it it has worked very well at a number of airshows and motor races. The touch screen focus is really good in live view too - just press the screen where you want the image focused and it does so then takes the picture, not so good for moving subjects but a very nice feature for slower scenes.

This guy nailed it on the difference between the two. Those are the only things I found after researching online and I ended up choosing the t4i.

Well Canon just released the next version, T6i and the T6s. You might want to pick one of them up. Major difference/improvements.

Wonder if they are updating the 70D soon as those specs, to me anyway, make the two look very similar. A cheap rebel with a focus system like the original 7D definately appeals to me though - would have got the 7D myself for the focus system but needed the tilt screen as it is used extensively to photograph over crowds at festivals and to get low level shots without lying in the mud :)

Not that there's anything wrong with the t4i focus, got some great shots from it but better tracking from focus point to focus point would be nice.

I can promise you that you wont regret.
I have T4i and since day one I could not use my bigger EOS 5D 1D etc. The touch screen and articulated LCD are totally addictive and I want them on any other Canon body.
Now with added WiFi etc of T6i, it has no shortage.
Enjoy and don't allow anyone to change you mind.

I've been patiently waiting for a price reduction on the 70D. For the past two months the body only 70D was priced at $999. But on the first of February every store returned the 70D body only price back to $1099.

So here I am patiently waiting on the 70D and along comes this new T6i. I originally had a T1i and now have the T3i. I must admit the specs on the new T6i look to be extensive and attractive. In fact the features are almost the same as the 70D.

I'm going to wait a bit longer to allow for some user feedback regarding the new T6i. In the meantime I'm still waiting for the price to drop on the 70D.

I have this feeling as soon as I buy the 70D a new revised 70D mark 1 will be announced.

For now I'm on the fence and going to do some more reading about this T6i.

70D (Body only) from Canon's own Refurb store was even $750 at one point this Holyday season. But then don't forget the Autofocusing inheritant issues with 70D that is a major concern despite all the goodies 70D provides.

BTW if you are going to use it primarily or heavily for Video footage too, make sure to buy T6s and not T6i. Otherwise save the money for extra battery, memory, grip etc.

I don't believe video is the only difference that should be a deciding factor between these two, and with only $100 price
difference, if I'm going to spend that much, then I would spring the extra $100 for all the options, however that is just my opinion and others will have their own, and the world continues to spin. :-)

Oh and to the OP, didn't the (some) T4i's have an issue with the grip material, either coming off or some other problem?

There was recall that the rubber turned white. It's been remedied. That blemish is what launched the T5i.
