Any thoughts, preferably with a 17 - 55 lens on the unit, what bag will carry that easily please ?

I've looked at the 10EG Canon bag, but unsure it will take the vertical grip ?

Cheers in advance for your help ..

I had never heard of Domke until I started reading Jon's posts either. But I have a couple of them now.... and they are great. The thing I like most? You can actually work out of them while you are out and about.... unlike a couple other bags/backpacks I have. I really need to sell my backpack. I'm not good at getting rid of stuff. ;)

My favorite Domke bag is my F1X. It's more expensive than the F3X... and much bigger. But I can carry my gripped camera with my 100-400ii installed, along with 2 other lenses. I keep a lot of other stuff in the pockets in front and on the sides. I wouldn't want to carry any more weight than that..... so I put in the 2 extra lenses I think will work best for where I'll be.

You can almost always find less expensive options..... but when you get something you really like using, in most cases, it's worth the price difference in the long run.

I still use a Domke that's close to 30 years old and not close to end-of-life. If they last that long, a "high" initial price is still better than something less expensive you'll have to replace 2 or 3 times. My experience with the various ballistic nylon/cordura/poly bags has been that they're very happy to wear through at the folds and corners.

I think you've convinced me Jon ... if I can get my 7D + Grip + 17m - 55m lens in the F-3X I reckon I'll go for it ... despite the comments on some websites saying the padding on the base isn't enough ... have you found that to be the case Jon, from a protective perspective ?

Cheers again for all your help !

The padding's fine. It's about 1/2" or so of closed-cell (high-density) foam.

Jon, you made me remember that I bought a Domke bag in the very early 1980's. Still in great shape, with no need to replace it. Granted, it was used lightly for some time. But if they are still similar today, I would have no second thoughts about buying another.

The classics still seem to be made of the same hard-wearing canvas. The only changes from my original Domke F2 are that they now use thermoplastic instead of stainless/chromed steel for the strap buckle and slider (the snaps are still brass), they now have non-slip shoulder straps but don't have the Velcro for attaching a monopod, and the inserts have gone through several iterations from the original canvas.
