OFFICIAL : 5DS and 5DS R Announced

I added Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM image samples. These were taken at a party with a 580EX II attached.

This was where I encountered an “Err 20” when I shot stills after taking 3 to 6 minute videos. Hopefully this can be solved with a simple firmware update.

Other image samples include Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM and Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM.

All of the images shared are not how Canon marketed the camera to be used as.

Shadow, I need more time with the 5Ds R to make a definitive verdict on the AF system. I am used to the AF system of the 5D Mark II, 7D and 1D Mark IV. I have the 7D Mark II but its AF needs to be serviced by CPS. as keepers were disappointing.

Jay, I rarely encounter tight patterns in my shoots. I seldom photograph those hence my being fearless on getting the R. If I see any I will try to do some image samples as well.

Dynamic range looks pretty good to me, some shots from my 5Ds

Hmmm. Not great. How does the 1Dx perform in this regard? Similar to the 5Ds or closer to the D810?

iTR was created for sport photographers to hit football players at 50 yards away or more, not an eye at 1 foot. Sport photographers have to hit a person at long distance with a large amount of DOF, so plenty of tolerance. Even trying to use iTR to shoot someones eye is a pointless test since DOF will make accuracy impossible. So even if Nikon does that better, it is still pretty useless. What it can do is maybe birds on a blank background.

Anyway, 1Dx has face recognition

In other words, incredibly useful for wildlife photography where you want focus to be on the eye, not somewhere else on the animal. Depth of field is small even at long distances due to the focal lengths involved.

Besides, it's not as if the Nikon system can't focus on the football player just as easily, if it can keep focus on an eye.

Animal eyes are somewhat harder to focus on, mostly as they are quite dark and doing so at one foot is different to finding an eye at 50yards or more. Would love to have a go but so far the Nikon photographers I know go with 9 or 21 point group because they cannot rely on the eye focus for anything but close ups, slow moving close-ups. Even in the video we see that the focus point is not, and due to the number of points, cannot always be on the eye. Which is where user skill and those tolerances come into it.

Will we one day be able to let the camera do the work, probably. Lets see how well the A7R2 handles it with a zillion focus points.

Anyone here with the 5DS able to comment about live view AF speed? Is it any faster than 5DM3 when using CDAF?

Not really. If the framing is similar (i.e. the subject takes up the same proportion of the frame) the eye will look the same size in both situations. Just that you're probably using a 24mm lens in one instance and an 800mm lens in the other.

I've shot some wildlife with the D810. The tracking really is excellent - nothing at all like the D800/D800e. Pity about the lack of a 200-400 with inbuilt TC.

I think this will be the answer. Unlike an SLR, a mirrorless camera has real-time access to the full sensor resolution for tracking focus, not just a low-resolution AF sensor.

Probably more likely with the A9 than the A7rII, though - this requires a lot of processor power and probably more battery power than a miniature body can carry.

And there's no technical reason you can't make it focus just as quickly via an adapter whether you put a Sony, Nikon or Canon lens in front of it.

That's a bit upsetting. I would not have expected that fabric to moire.

Why didn't you expect this? How could it be upsetting? Canon provided two models: 5DS with an AA filter to address moire, and the 5DS R with an added AA cancellation filter to maximize detail with increased risk of moire. That sample was from a 5DS R. With any camera, though, - even the 5DS - there will be incidents of moire.

There are moire eradication processes available in raw converters, like Lightroom. So, it shouldn't pose a serious concern.
