That's a bit upsetting. I would not have expected that fabric to moire.

A pattern of tiny specular highlights? Can happen with glossy, synthetic fibers. Tiny points of light smaller than a pixel alias/moire very easily without an AA filter, and there is no way for conversion software to remotely guess if it is color or luminance information. If it is blurred enough that it affects neighboring red, green, and blue pixels, then it is more clearly luminance information.

Have you ever tried those converters? My impression is that none of them works very well.

that is a link to a directory with lots of files that you can't see a thumb nail of - would appreciate the actual file link - thanks - i'm very interested in moire research on the 5dsr

I only have layman's understanding of moire. I think it's reasonably common knowledge for anyone who watches TV to know that some fabrics are not suitable for TV, common to see on TV when audience members get involved.
I have no idea what experience or knowledge you have.

I just googled "moire" and there are many examples of single colour fabrics (if that's why you did not expect it)

Working on Chrome here too with no problems.

Not that bothered with moire. I either change angle or change body.

In other words, incredibly useful for wildlife photography where you want focus to be on the eye, not somewhere else on the animal. Depth of field is small even at long distances due to the focal lengths involved.

Besides, it's not as if the Nikon system can't focus on the football player just as easily, if it can keep focus on an eye.

Those videos are a bit misleading (IMHO). Automatic AF point selection - which is what iTR does - is not the same as AF tracking. I notice they don't take any photos to show you if the eye is actually in focus. Just because the AF point is over something doesn't mean it is in focus, especially if the subject and/or camera is moving.

One very useful feature that the Canon cameras have is that you can tailor the key AF parameters (including the AF point auto-switching sensitivity) to your subject. Who knows what they had that set to for the 'test'?

I believe iTR was developed primarily for sports photographers to assist in tracking individuals around the field of play and there are many other videos on YouTube showing that it does that very well.

My main interest is wildlife photography and I can think of very, very few situations where you would want to rely on automatic AF point selection and/or any form of facial recognition. A bird against a plain blue sky maybe but even then you will get better results using single point or one of the group/surround modes.
