Preorder yours here:

I so want this. Widest rectilinear lens in production!

I can't wait to see some pics made with this monster!--that look is gonna be so unique.

EDIT: B&H was about 10min late to the game:

Good luck to Canon on this. I have the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II, and it is an excellent lens. Current price at B&H is $949. The Canon is $2,999. I am curious as to what I would get in practical terms for spending $2,000 more for the Canon over the Sigma. 1mm and one stop isn't enough for me, nor is the Canon name and the red ring. I own a few L lenses, and wouldn't part with them. This one I don't understand at this price point.

Guess you don't think much of Zeiss' 15mm either for $3k'ish? You know, being a prime and missing AF and all that..., does have filter threads though, which I guess is a significant plus.

The 11-24mm will probably be sharper into the corners, especially when paired with the 5Ds and 5DsR cameras (see 16-35mm f/4L IS vs Sigma 12-24mm - http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0 (external link) and I assume the 11-24mm will be of a similar sharpness). Whether that difference is worth $2000 to someone is a personal value judgment.

I always find it amusing when things like this are announced and the naysayers come out in droves, lambasting the price.

$2999 sounds about right.

This is the world's widest rectilinear AF lens.
It has a gargantuan 87mm front element.
It is a constant F4.

This is a serious tool for a serious professional, no one else needs to pay any attention.

And if you don't like it, you don't have to buy it...so why waste your energy? Canon is a company, and they can charge whatever they want. The target market will respond accordingly.
I'm way more interested in finding out how I can import that new M3...

I want to see the reaction of these folks to the manual focus Nikon 13mm f/5.6. One just sold for $24,500.

If you don't understand why these lenses go for that much, then its probably not for you

Sample video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI_gHK5hqnE (external link)

That's crazy wide, and the distortion seems to be very well-controlled (although there may be software correction at work).

If this lens is sharp with low distortion, canon's new 50mp + 11-24 is probably the next best thing to medium format + wide angle.

Looks like an interesting lens for those people who like to shoot really wide. However, 16mm is wide enough for my needs, so I will be sticking with the 16-35L f/4 IS, especially at the price point of the 11-24mm.
