It addresses most of my concerns about the M: better AF (although I would've rather seen a DP sensor), better ergonomics and physical controls, screen, flash, all that I really wanted that isn't there is a built-in EVF.

Yes, if the AF is indeed fast (need to see that), with a tilting LCD I could live without an EVF - as long as it means having a decent selection of good lenses at reasonable prices.

Let's see if Canon starts adding lenses to their EF-M lineup.

I doubt the AF comes close to the A6000, but the CMOS3 samples seem to show it tracking slow movement pretty well in face detect mode. I've used the a6000 on fast moving skiers and wrestlers and it worked like a champ.

The biggest questions for me are how the new sensor in the m3 performs in the noise and DR departments.

Well, I don't have A6000 but the older Nex-6 and the AF speed is quite satisfactory for my needs, so if EOS M3 is like this I'd be happy.

The old Canon sensor in my T3i wasn't as advanced as Sony but still good enough.

The biggest question for me is the lenses.

DPReview has a review... sort of (no mention of AF speed or accuracy).

Not available in the US.

Cost at release in Europe about $870.

Does have a stronger and faster built in flash than Nex (GN10 and 1/200).

Looks great, but I am a bit worried the press release does not mention much about the sensor (noise, DR) and there is no ISO range improvement compared to the M1.
And of course, I am also hoping for more lenses...

Wow, it has focus peaking. See (@2min 20s): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6raSxmk3_4c (external link)
Not that that's a 'wow' feature, more that i'm surprised canon actually put it in.

EOS-M3 AF performance (lousy vid): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNoSSXZUsFc (external link)
CMOS-3 AF-performance on 750/760d (should be same for m3): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6TluLohfks (external link)

Canon are certainly stating it has fast/accurate AF... will see what happens when it's actually in reviewer's hands..

I bought an original m back in November brand new for real cheap. The thing is built like a tank and takes great photos. I would buy another one. If the 3 is an improvement, I'll consider it.

I expect similar DR and noise improvements like the 70D and 7D mk2, but it's bad that dual pixel AF is not present in this camera. Right now I don't see a reason to update myself from an EOS M even with his flaws.

Would you buy it for $800, though ?

I am not worried about sensor - it's got to be at least as good as the T3i sensor, so good enough. Maybe not as wide DR or good high ISO as Sony, but then I consider Canon to have the best skin tones straight out of camera and that amounts for something too.

I'd like to see a few more lenses & good AF, and then it would be definitely a camera to consider.

This sounds interesting even if i need to import it. I compiled a complete M system and I find it very useful. The 50-200 is great and the 11-22 is fantastic. Added a better finger grip as well as a thumbgrip and an optical viewfinder for use with the 22mm. A complete travel kit in a very compact package.

I will be watching this one as the reviews develop.

Thanks for sharing.

I however want great inexpensive APS-C lenses on a great APS-C body...

I do too, so I got an SL1. ;) AF is plenty fast, and though the body isn't as small as the M, it's awfully small. The M isn't pocketable once you put on a non-pancake lens anyway.

I love a like, but feedback (including CC) is even better!

An SL1 with the new 24MP sensor, 19 point AF and hybrid CMOS AF would make a killer little system. I'm waiting to see if it eventuates :)

It's not that much smaller compared to a Rebel.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

SL-1 vs Nex-6

This doesn't mean that SL1 is not a good system - but it's much closer in size to a Rebel than to a mirrorless.

Plus, it's using DSLR lenses, so unless you're limiting yourself to shooting only the 40mm pancake, you still have to pack a relatively sizable bunch of gear.

I think M3, even lacking EVF, could be a very interesting system if AF works fast enough and if Canon comes up with more lenses for it.

I, however, would be hesitant to buy $1000 worth of gear without warranty.

EF-M lenses are still somewhat smaller than EF or EF-S lenses making the entire thing smaller.

There might be some new lenses coming as well. Canonrumors points out that the promotional video shows a f/1.2 setting !! I am hoping for a 50/1.2 prime :)

The M is significantly smaller and lighter than the SL1. Here is a comparison showing the smallest full-frame wide-angle (6d with 17-40), the SL1 with 10-18, and the M with 11-22.
