The M3 has now started to ship and there are first comments available on the net, e.g. at dpreview. Not sure what to make of the comments yet. I hope we will have some good and comprehensive reviews soon.

by the few posts I've seen in dpreview forums, some people have had issues with the new camera, others not seen the m3 as a real upgrade over the M1 about IQ, the lack of LR support, let's see the reviews to see if it worth over the M1 and if it's not going to be missed by the US market.

Everyone that keeps saying the M was a failure need to realize it was only a failure in the American market. The original EOS M was one of the top selling cameras in Japan. It took the #3 spot and took 9.2% of all mirrorless sales. Canon's goal was to take about 10% of the mirrorless market in Japan and they did. The EOS M out sold every other mirrorless camera except 1 Olympus and 1 Sony. Think about that.

As for dpreview they are a tough crowd and you have to take what they say with a grain of salt.

I have had my M for a year and it takes fine pictures. Is the autofocus as fast as an SLR? No but its fine. The hysteria about it being slow is over blown IMO. I will be being an M3 as soon as it becomes available even if I have to get from Japan or Europe. I already have 3 of the lenses and the adapter for my other Canon lenses. Its a no brainer.

I'm not sure I follow. That appears to be the prevailing understanding in this thread (and among POTN members in general, from what I've read).

For anyone who is interested, the M3 is arriving in the UK at the moment. Over on the Talk Photography forum some one has done an unboxing video (see link below) and will be posting some sample images within the next 24hours.

I played with the M3 shortly a few days ago at a major electronics store and I was very surprised by the responsive (fast AF) of the M3 compared to my M1.

It was indoors, with enough of light I suppose, so I cant say anything about AF in low(er) light.
But from what I tested, it worked very well.

Eos M, 5DII, and some lenses.

I think the expectation level of the original EOS M was that it was going to be a mini-SLR which it wasn't. I can't comment on the first revision of software it came with as my came with the latest revision. But that being said its fine. Is it as fast as an SLR? No but its easily as fast as a lot of the Fuji's which get rave reviews despite the autofocus being the same and worse.

This I can say, if you like the way the Canon EOS system works and likes the pictures it takes you won't be disappointed by the EOS M. Frankly you can't differentiate pictures taken with the EOS M from any of the other EOS cameras. I have dabbled with the other mirrorless brands and the latest being a Panasonic GX7. Don't get me wrong the GX7 is a very nice camera but was it twice as nice as my EOS M? Nope.

For me I like the fact that the EOS M fits into all my existing Canon stuff. If I didn't have anything I probably would consider Olympus or some of the others as well. But since I have all this Canon stuff as I said in my earlier post, its a no brainer.

If you want to see what the EOS M can do look at this thread:

I think you're missing my point. I'm not arguing the merits for or against the EOS M system as a product. In fact, I think everyone mentioning its failure realize it in the same manner as you--a failure in the American market.

M was a great system at giveaway firesale prices they were sold at in the last year or so.

At the original price of $800 it was a massive flop.

Mine came in on Thursday and I carried it with me today to test it out a bit. Overall I am pleased with it in comparison to the original.

I keep coming back to this thread every now and again just to get a sense for how users are feeling about this camera. I have no interest in it since going with Samsung as my mirrorless option but as someone who was initially excited and then completely underwhelmed by the M1, it is interesting to see the progression in the M line and how POTNers feel about it :)
