Orkney - Italian Chapel

I spent a week in Orkney last June, and one of the sights visited was the Italian Chapel. This was build by Italian prisoners of war who were used to build the Churchill Barriers to prevent German U-Boats from entering the Royal Navy harbours at Scapa Flow. The prisoners were given Nissen huts, and from one of these they constructed their chapel.

What a pretty church - oviously a labor of love.

Beautiful chapel, John, and excellent photos. I saw one built in similar fashion in Yukon Territory, Canada. While not as nice, it still is quite interesting.

Thanks Jaime. The interior is all the more impressive when you realise that the tiles are only painted and not real. :)

These ones were taken with my PowerShot S30. I didn't get my DSLR until a month later.

You're quite right Richard. I didn't notice when I took the photo, but it was the first thing I spotted when I was resizing for posting here. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to visit Orkney again - bummer.:lol:

Thanks Balliolman. For a mere P&S camera, it can still give good results. ;)
