Orkney - Ring of Brodgar

The Ring of Brodgar is a Neolithic stone circle built between 2500 and 2000 BC (i.e around 4500 years ago ). The ring was built in a circle 104m in diameter and originally had 60 stones, although only 27 now remain.

I see some stones are spliting apart? Ice maybe?

One more thing,are you covered by the shadow there or long lens?

Thanks Dimitri. I got lucky that day. I was there earlier and the weather was overcast and rainy. I then went for a meal and when I came out it was dry and there was some nice light. I positioned myself in the shadow when I took the photo.

I'm sure that you're right about the ice. If I remember correctly from my degree years, the process is called solifluction where water gets into a crack, and if it freezes and expands, then this puts stresses on the cracks that fails over repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
