Ordered it from B&H Thursday night and had it here at my home in Iowa Friday afternoon with free shipping. You can't beat that. Now time to learn all the new settings. I am going to micro adjust my 100-400 using the dot tune method. Is this a pretty good method to use? Also what are your setting for BIF that you are getting good results with. Lots of eagles around here and the waterfowl will be coming through in another month or so. I would like to have a starting place for BIF to work with.

With your handle, you should be headed to Daytona. :-)

Shoot with your lens for a while before doing mfa. If you consistently see front or back focus, then consider mfa. You probably won't need it.

For birds, I usually start with manual mode, 1/1000, f/5 (ish), Auto ISO, evaluative metering (sometimes spot), center point focusing, ai servo, focus case 1.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Your right I should be headed to Daytona. Would be a lot nicer weather there also then what it is here in Iowa. Thanks for the tips. I just did the dot tune and got 4 different results. I wonder if I need more light. I had the camera set to iso 100 at F5.6 and the shutter speed was 160. My four results were (0 or +1), (+3), (+2 or +3) and (-1)

I've used dot tune in the past but have read some reports of it being inconsistent. So now I just use an angled target inside for shorter lenses and an angled brick wall outside for longer lenses.

I just did four more and this time all 4 were 0 or +1 so I think I will just leave it at 0 and shoot awhile and see how it does. I noticed there are two different MFA adjustments on the camera. The top one didn't make any difference when adjusted and the bottom one did. My 7D just had one adjustment. I used the bottom one. I saw someone also posted a three book method. I will give your angled brick wall and this three book method a try just to see what the photos look like.

Angled targets will front-focus because the AF point is bigger than you think, and it will focus on the nearest part.

Enjoy your new camera. The 7D-2 is a fantastic piece of equipment.

The top one is for the 100mm end of your lens. The bottom one is for the 400mm end. Primes will have just one adjustment scale.

I don't use a 7D2 but on my 1Dx (similar AF settings/cases) I use Manual mode, 1/1000 sec at F8 with Auto ISO. Partial metering, AF case 5 and single/single + 4 assist/single + 8 assist AF points depending on how accurately I can follow the bird.
This setup seems to work well for all my photography, I like to keep things simple!

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I will have to do the 100 end too.

Thank you for sharing your settings. I am ready to dig into this camera and see what it can do.

The target is square on the lens axis, the scale for DOF is angled:

This is very much like the target I use. Maybe the "angled scale" is not a good description. I only used the "angled brick wall" for my 70-300 because I didn't have enough room inside. And it did, indeed, front focus a bit and need an additional adjustment.

I think I will give this a try just to compare results with the dottune method

Heck! It's free!...:-D
Print it on normal paper, but the glue it on cardboard, so it retains the desired shape. Let us know of the results!
