"Whistling Death" was a name given by the Japanese, in the South Pacific, for the F4 Corsair. The Corsair made a distinctive sound as it dove down on enemy positions in Okinawa and other South Pacific islands. The F4 was used in shore based service initially, by U.S. Marines, while the aircraft was refined for Naval carrier defense.

To hear for yourself why the Corsair earned the name follow this link to see/hear it in action (external link).

Love the shot. I'm a fan of aggressive crops like this. But it would also be good to include one that showed the entire plane also to give perspective to anyone unfamiliar with the F4 look. Its one of my favorite WW II warbirds.

Again, nice work!

Thanks Texaskev, I appreciate your thoughts. The Corsair is one of my favorites as well. Later this spring there might be an op to see 3 maybe 4 of them at the same fly-in. Fingers crossed.

Here is another perspective ...

I really like that first shot. Looking at the Wikipedia article on the F4U it amazes me that there are so few left they all fit in a single list. I wonder which of the airworthy ones are in used for ride alongs.

Thanks Michiel and Tandem. From what I have read there was a two seat trainer prototype developed towards the end or after WWII but I don't know of any still around. There have been however, many restorations that modified a jump seat aft of the canopy under the fuselage - it was dark, cramp, sometimes smokey and hot. It offered little to no view and if something was to go wrong it was very difficult to get out in a hurry. A second seat ride along in a P-51 Mustang is probably a much better option :)

Thank you M_Six and tacphotog ... there is a certain kind of beauty in these old warbirds, I am fortunate to have captured just a bit of it.
