Just got back to photography last Dec after a hiatus of 5 years...

Got myself the latest and the greatest
-7D mark 2
-70-200 2.8 IS mark 2
- 85L 1.2 mark 2
- 600ex-rt

and then it happened... i was accidentally introduced to Zeiss lenses..
bought a Distagon 35/1.4 at a steal price, loved it and almost havent left my camera since..
now, im in the process of closing another great deal on "2" Zeiss Distagon lenses (50/1.4 and 100/2.0 makro)

the 70-200 gets to mount the camera once in a while but the 85L doesnt get any shooting time at all...
i am now thinking of letting go the 85L and going BIG for the Zeiss Otus 85.

i know, im crazy right?? well that's what my wife told me last night :-P

someone, cure me please!

and are you coming to this forum, lurking with gearheads, full of G.A.S., asking for help????

sure, I will light your pile, and will doze with gasoline first :)

So, why don't you like/use the 85mm f1.2L? if the zoom it's making it obsolete, replacing one with another is not going to help much - and yes, I know first hand, the Otus is a whole new league.

IMO, you are missing a full frame camera - sell the 85 and get a 6D or well maintained 5D2 first.

the 70-20omk2 is for sure a keeper, but all depends of what kind of photography you like to do.

Nothing wrong in getting high quality glass, and better yet MF type, if that fits your style and needs.
By all means, the Otus is wonderful - but you will be a bit off with the amazing DOF in a crop body, aside a bit longer (around 130mm)

The 100 f/2 is a great lens, but I would go after a WA zoom instead, or a nice WA, like the zeiss 21 for instance.
Hard to say much without knowing your interests (photographic speaking), other than they are all wonderful lenses you have in line up, IF unlike the 85L, you put them to use (after all real paper weights are far less expensive)

I started with one, and am up to six now - hard time letting go one that really should go too, because it will always be a great piece of glass.

Take a small break and think twice - the only 50mm I like is the 50mp, but you are looking at the 100 already as half size macro, so I don't care to recommend any other 50mm (unless you go a bit longer with the Otus 55mm :D:D)

So, yes for the 100,, sell the 85, quit on the 50.... and

edit: your turn :p

I have the Otus 55 and 85 (and have owned the 50L and 85L in the fast) and I have the 70-200L II as well.

People buy the Otus lenses if they absolutely must have sharpness edge-to-edge on FF cameras wide open with negligible coma, CA or veiling and they shoot subjects where they can take your time in focusing (focusing the 85mm Otus on the 5D3 is not trivial). I would say that you want a full frame camera (5D3 / 5Ds / 6D) before getting the Otus lenses because you won't be taking full advantage of them otherwise.

I wouldn't use your 35/1.4 to form a judgement of the 50/1.4 otherwise you'll be a tad disappointed. The 50/1.4 (ZE) is probably the least Zeiss-like of all their original Canon mount (ZE) offerings. I'm not knocking it but is has a different style about it....almost akin to a soft focus/diffraction lens and could be considered "dreamy". The 50/2 Makro-Planar is the way forwards if you're covering the FL bases.

I don't get the logic of selling an 85mm lens you don't use for another one, which you would likely use heavily at first just because it's "new" and then it would be sold off later on. Just sell it and move on to another focal length you would use more often, regardless of brand!
