newbie question about use of a softbox for a speedlite

Then you will likely have a hard time matching the softbox output with the ambient light (especially with the "ceiling lights"), in terms of color. I'd suggest to get at least a couple of flashes with light modifiers (softboxes or even umbrellas), and ignore the ambient light (reduce the amount of the ambient light, and make sure the flashes overpower it, at the camera's sync exposure - usually 1/200-1/250s).
