Thanks for the comments, and replies.
In this case, Namasste, I did use the pre-registered FP on the goaltender in this shot as he was far-right in the frame. There was empty white area on the left side of the frame which was cropped out of this image, and I left that open as the puck carrier was below and out of frame. I was planning for him to take a shot from that area, and have one of the players go for a deflection. If the few players were stationed in front of the other side of the net, I would have used the manual focal point on the left side of the frame to keep the netminder in focus, allowing me to capture everything on the right side, which in this instance, would have included the shooter as well. If that would have been the case, then I would have been able to just hit the pre-registered FP, as it most likely would have included the shooter on the open side of the frame.
I usually have the points set up this way so I can follow the action of the players as they move up and down the ice. Since I sit right about at the center line to shoot, if a player is moving from left to right, I can use the appropriate focal point depending on if someone is chasing the puck carrier, or if the carrier is going to be challenged by someone in front of him. So if I am shooting a guy moving left-to-right, and he is being chased, I will use the right focal point so I can get both in focus, and vice versa if he's being challenged. At least in my head this all works out =)
Thanks, too, Pat.Kane for the comments. I tend to get overly critical of my shooting, so I guess I shouldn't gripe about it =)
