As usual, shot with 1DX + 300 2.8 mk2. First few were taken from the bench during warm-ups, other from over the glass around center ice.

6. Really wish I had a zoom on this shot so I wouldn't have shot so tight. This was probably the best save I have ever seen in person, in over 200+ games.

Excellent set full of action, the first two shots really stand out, shooting from the bench really improves the shots.

Dave.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, the shooter certainly got robbed on this shot. My only failure on this was not getting the shooter in the shot, but here's why: When I shoot with the 1DX, I have a pre-registered focus point on the right, and one I move freely on the left of the viewfinder. Right before this shot, all of the action was on the left side of the frame, so I was using the pre-registered right focal point to keep the goaltender in focus, and also get the action on the left side. Then, all of the sudden, a cross-crease pass and a one-timer right in front of the net. I did not even have enough time to pan over to the right to catch the shooter in action, it was that fast. Glad I caught the save, but it would have been a standout shot had I got the shooter instead of the guys on the left.

agreed on your comments on #6 but its still an bsolutely banger! Curious as to why you don't use the pre-registered focus on the keeper since it would allow you to get any action close in (right or left). That obviously assumes the keep is your main focus. If you are trying to catch the shooters more, then I'd understand the right or left pre-focus points more.

Great shots, especially #6. I had a great shot of a goalie a couple of weeks ago. He was isolated and the puck was just a foot away and showed up cleanly against the boards as a backdrop, but I missed focus :-(

So stop whining about missing the shooter!

Thanks for the comments, and replies.

In this case, Namasste, I did use the pre-registered FP on the goaltender in this shot as he was far-right in the frame. There was empty white area on the left side of the frame which was cropped out of this image, and I left that open as the puck carrier was below and out of frame. I was planning for him to take a shot from that area, and have one of the players go for a deflection. If the few players were stationed in front of the other side of the net, I would have used the manual focal point on the left side of the frame to keep the netminder in focus, allowing me to capture everything on the right side, which in this instance, would have included the shooter as well. If that would have been the case, then I would have been able to just hit the pre-registered FP, as it most likely would have included the shooter on the open side of the frame.

I usually have the points set up this way so I can follow the action of the players as they move up and down the ice. Since I sit right about at the center line to shoot, if a player is moving from left to right, I can use the appropriate focal point depending on if someone is chasing the puck carrier, or if the carrier is going to be challenged by someone in front of him. So if I am shooting a guy moving left-to-right, and he is being chased, I will use the right focal point so I can get both in focus, and vice versa if he's being challenged. At least in my head this all works out =)

Thanks, too, Pat.Kane for the comments. I tend to get overly critical of my shooting, so I guess I shouldn't gripe about it =)

Solid logic, thanks for sharing. I rarely use pre-registered points on their own (meaning, I'm just shooting servo and maybe have a point I'll switch to infrequently) so hearing the why of what you're doing is very cool.
