Hi i am debating whether i should get an A7r and just be done with it as i have a feeling that the 5d4 wont have the DR to even match the A7R?

i currently have a 5d3 and if i chose a a7r, i will be using both cameras for different needs.

Do i lose AF/IQ when using a canon adapter that allows me to attach my canon lenses on an A7R?

First of all, I would wait for the A7R II or A9, whatever it will be called.

You will have slow AF with an adapter for your Canon lenses, very slow, but my main problem with the Sony is that AF is always slow compared to any other modern camera.

I would at least wait until 5d4 is out and see what a7r replacement should have.

A7 was announced about 1 year before the A7ii.
Yep, cameras to Sony are like cell phones. One year cycle.
Wait and see (f WWIII and economic collapse haven't happened first) if Sony doesn't offer
cell app in one of their A7(9) bodies. :) Then you can leave your i-6 or Note-4 at home for that days shoot
and just speak into your camera HA!! Even I'm laughing at that.

I'm in the same boat. Sony's size/weight just seems to tempting. Plus they have the best sensor in the $1400 price range. A7r is an excellent body IMHO. Sony just needs to have more lenses to go with their excellent bodies.

After shooting with a Sony A7r for nearly a year let me share some thoughts on Sony size and other features.

Since it is full frame, the lenses are large, heavy and expensive. When mounted on the tiny A7r, it is unbalanced, front heavy and hard to hold still.

Sony lacks the variety of large aperture lenses of Canon and Nikon.

Battery life is miserable - 300 shots usually if you are careful and it is not too cold.

Startup time is a killer for getting a quick shot of kids, animals or sports.

Focus is the most distinguishing thing between a Sony or a Nikon or Canon. Sony is far behind both in focus speed and accuracy.

Sony has better DR and high ISO performance than Canon and equal to Nikon. In everyday shooting, I do not miss the DR or High ISO advantage of the Nikon or Sony vs the 7D MKII.

I disagree. All the FE mount lenses are smaller and lighter than their Canon equivalents. Even with Canon most of the weight will be in your left hand, to me it's as near as makes no difference.

People like to list this as a con, but to me it had yet to be an issue. I'm shooting in the winter outdoors here in 30 degrees Fahrenheit or lower and can go for several hours on one battery. And of it dies it takes me 10 seconds to swap in another... I really don't see the issue.

Startup time is a killer for getting a quick shot of kids, animals or sports.

If you've just changed a battery, yes, otherwise I don't see the problem, startup is maybe half a second slower than Canon.

I feel like we're using totally different cameras after this comment. Yes, the Sonys have better DR, but all but the a7S lag noticeably behind the current Canons in regards to ISO performance. I had to sell the a7R because it really just couldn't hold a candle to what my 6D could do, by ISO 6400 the color was pretty much unusable.

Been using Sony a7 cameras for a few months now (a7R first, now a7S), my response is in bold.

Just an opinion of mine. I got the A7R on December and I've been struggling with this camera ever since. Compared to my 5DMKIII, the A7R is very disappointing in term of AF performance (I, particularly disappointed in the accuracy). Battery is also another annoying issue, the camera is practically eating the batteries like no tomorrow. If I am in your shoe, I'll wait for the new 5D4 and skip the Sony. Again, this is my own opinion after trying the Sony since December.

WiFi eats up your battery like no other. Are you shooting airplane mode? Also, the later firmware updates have improved battery life and start up time significantly .

That said, if you need the AF speed of the 5DIII, the a7r is not a good choice as a replacement . The a7II, which uses phase detect AF would be a better choice.

Having both a 5d3 and a a7r/s is a great combo

Absolutely. I have both and they're a perfect compliment to each other. That said, the a7r gets used the majority of the time....5DIII comes out of the bag only when absolutely necessary :-)

I switched from my Canon 6D to an a7R because I wanted the DR and Resolution of the sensor. I do mostly large print conceptual images. The image quality is amazing, but it definitely has quirks. There are some thing I really liked about it, especially the customize-ability. It can function any way you want it to. I personally didn't think the AF was bad, I only had the 55mm FE, which is probably the sharpest lens I have ever used. If you are doing sports or wedding photography, this is not the camera for you. If you do calculated landscape or big artwork, its a great camera. I really loved the electronic VF. Being able to zoom in to manual focus through the eyepiece made AF entirely unnecessary for my needs. Even shooting models for conceptual images.
I have large hands and couldn't get past the shutter shake (may not be an issue for some, but I can't do professional advertising or gallery artwork with a camera that has that kind of fundamental issue), and i couldn't wait any longer for the a9, so I ended up selling it for the Nikon D810 and I am glad I did. It is so much more professional of a rig, but there are definitely things I wish the Nikon has that the a7R has. I'm not totally sold on the a9 either, I think putting 50MP on a FF sensor is pushing the boundaries. I think you need a bigger sensor for that and it will show in the images. I think the D810 is as close to perfect as you can get right now.

Best of luck!
