This is the first time i have taken anything at night, so pointers would be greatly appreciated. How do you not get the rainbow circle around the lights?

Exif details would help so that we can give pointers. Perhaps use a larger F number, say f/9-12

As Adam said, the EXIF details would be great. I always aim to use a tripod and cable release (and if I remember, mirror lockup), iso 100, and around f/8-16. I'll then play around with the shutter speed depending on light conditions. I've posted some of my attempts in the Edinburgh at Christmas thread.

Assuming that the photos are digital ;), then most processing software, e.g. Photoshop will display the EXIF data.

Also, if your PC is running Windows XP you can navigate to the folder containing the image, right-click on the thumbnail, click "Properties" and then "Summary".

Just as a shot in the dark, are you using the 18-55mm Canon "Kit lens" ie comes with 300/350/20d ???

If so mine did this all the time and worse.
I fixed quite simply by, logging on to ebay and selling it for a pitence and investing in a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX.
I hated those rainbows, they were everywhere on mine
(Of course if it's not the 18-55 then just ignore me, I'll get me' coat!)
