I always use B+W filters. They are a little more expensive. My thinking is that, either not to use filters, or use filters of high quality so that they won't interfere with the IQ

I use B+W mulicoated (MRC) UV filters on all my lenses, and I have never had anything but good experiences.

Personally, I like the idea of easily cleaning off a dirty multicoated filter while out in the field a whole lot more than needing to quickly wipe down a front element. I know that there are a ton of arguments on both sides, but I feel a whole lot better having a good filter on my lenses.

^ That I can agree with. The more urban and street photography I do, the more often I need to wipe off my filter.
I would much rather clean the filter when needed, than clean the front element.
Also the added protection of sealing the moving front element is a bonus.

I will probably get a B+W MC filter. They seem to be popular among users.
However the prices here in Japan are about $90 USD for that 007M filter.

Any thoughts on the Kenko Zeta line? They seem popular here in Japan.
Priced the same here as the B+W 72mm's in the USA

B&W or good hoyas for me. I toss my cameras around all day so i dont want to take any chances with nicks or scratches on the front elements. Had a few close calls and glad i had the filters on.

Just for a bit of perspective.. when I worked as a professional (scientific) photographer many years ago, with manual nikkors, we used to clean the front elements with a bit of saliva and a handkerchief or the cuff of a sweater. Made NO difference to image quality at all. In the case of the 50L, I think a filter helps to seal against dust ingress because of the vacuum effect of the AF system. And obviously if you routinely shoot in seaside spray a filter protects the coatings of the lens from salt crystallisation (although you might want another filter to protect your $200 filter's coatings). But mostly, all you're protecting is resale value.

I've been using B+W MRC filters. No flare issues. I'm also going to try out a new company; Breakthrough photography which claims even better coatings than B+W, though my filters haven't yet arrived so I can't give my impressions yet.

I use these Hoya Pro1 Digital Protectors
http://www.amazon.co.uk …ctor-Filter/dp/B0009K7CZC (external link) £26.50 reduced from £38.

They say they do not change anything eg colour. I tested them in natursl daylight and with Bowens, flash and Bowens continuous lights - lets say I can see no difference at 200 %,

They go on all my lenses from day 1.

Protects my lens agsinst dirt, water, moisture and I guess the odd bump ( never had the latter happen ) but I did see a lens that had been dropped with one on. The protector was smashed to bits and the lens was totally unmarked.

£26 to protect a £1,800 lens its a no brainer!

Are there better, possibly? But IMHO anny additional cost of a more expensieve one would be far better placed upgrading the 5D3 to the 5DS R.
