My wife wants a new camera and I figured I would put her in a pretty basic mirrors camera over a standard point and shoot. That way I can use it too ha ha.

The two I am looking at are:

Nikon 1 J4
Sony a5000

Right now I am leaning towards the Sony, but wanted to get your opinions as I am not too well versed in the mirrorless line of cameras. Any insight is much appreciated. Looking to stay around $400 budget, but not opposed to stretching it a bit if it is worth it.

Thanks!

Skip the 5000 and go for the A6000, they're going for right around $350-400 if you keep an eye out for a deal.

It's autofocus can keep up with a Canon 5DM3 that costs 10xs more.

Decent high ISO as well, nice ergonomics. My sister got one and she loves it.

I would definitely go with an APS-C sensor based camera. I looked at thousands of pictures on the 'Net before making my decision. I chose the Samsung NX3000 for my wife. That's based on low weight (very important for her) and picture quality. To my eye, the colors and resolution from Samsung's 20.3 MP sensor look better than Sony's or Fuji's, for that matter. Samsung's lenses are of top quality and competitively priced.

She loves her new camera, btw.

This. I purchased mine awhile ago, took it on vacation and it saw more usage than my 5D3. No regrets.

The a6000 has been a great addition to my camera bag. I'm completely happy with it.
