This is making it difficult to use the forum to buy and sell things. Nobody ever knows when they have a PM waiting.

That blows. Pretty important feature to overlook.

It wasn't overlooked - however making the forum software operate smoothly when people try to post to threads and put up photographs, and read the forum when they're actually here, was deemed somewhat more critical. Don't forget that this was written from scratch, by one person. The mail component also has to deal with all kinds of mail servers' sometimes bizarre ideas of what constitutes spam, so that messages can get through reliably.

This fact is absolutely amazing.

I do understand that email notifications are not a priority, and that makes sense. The other things you mentioned are more important.

However, when the emails are added, it will be very helpful.

Currently, I am interested in something that a member has listed on the "Classifieds Sell" forum here. I replied to his/her ad with a question. After a few days I received no reply to my question. The seller simply hasn't visited the thread. So I PMed them. No reply to the PM. Then I realized that the seller has not visited POTN for almost a week. So, if they are not visiting POTN, how can they know that I have sent them a PM? How am I ever to get a reply from them, with an answer to my question? I don't have any other way of contacting this member. If they do not check into POTN for, well, weeks, or months, then how am I to ever arrange to buy the item from them?

The notifications were very helpful, as they can cause us to check back into POTN at times when otherwise we might not get on the site for many days, or even weeks, or months.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I was coming to ask about similar things. I hardly ever get on here anymore because those email notifications for PM's and threads responses were my trigger to come back. Without them, i get lost in my day to day life and forget to check back. Hope that feature gets added soon :-(

Next version will have PM notifications by email, and your post made me aware of the fact that the default setting must be "on".

I must admit that I have always wondered why someone would drop in a for sale ad or a thread and do not check the site daily for answers. Maybe it's just me, but it seems odd. Opening one web page is not any more difficult than opening an email client.

BTW, there is a mimimal notification page (need to be logged in):
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/notifications.php

I'll learn to write an Android/iOS app for such stuff, not just today.

It's just getting distracted to be honest. I have so much going on in my life between being a mom with two little ones, a full time college student and all the other chaos in my life. The email notifications pull my attention long enough for me to check back. Otherwise, its out of site, out of mind.

Any new developments with this feature? I am still not getting notifications when someone tries to contact me via PM. I do have notifications turned on in my settings.

Email features have been online for over 2 years now.

If you do not get email, it may be your email service provider's problem. Usually it is best to use "big" services like gmail or yahoo for most consistent results.

I'll monitor the situation.

- Click on FYEO in the top left corner.

- Then click on "Notifications Emails".

- Make sure everything you want enabled is enabled.

CC always welcome.

BTW: I noticed FYEO email log list can be somehow stalled, although it tells the last sent mail correctly. I'll look into that a bit later (building a new server now, pretty busy). I have other logs that tell notification emails are sent out fine.

I am aware of having to set things in FYEO and have done that and have been checking that for years; everything is set correctly for me to be notified. My email service is Yahoo.

Lately, I've just been getting in the habit to get online more even just to check to see if I have any PM's.

Thanks for the tips anyway. At least I know I have my settings right.

My email service is also Yahoo, and I have always received PM notification emails from this site with no problems at all. . They never end up in a SPAM folder by mistake, and are always right there in my inbox within an hour of when the PM was sent. . It has worked flawlessly. . Kudos to both Pekka and Yahoo!
