The Cardinals are very good at forecasting the weather, they come in early and late in low numbers on the good days, will see half dozen or so at a time. When the number of Cardinals seem to reach 25 to 30 at one time and they eat frantically even tolerating the Red Bellies and Blue Jays, the weather is going down hill soon. Took these shots this afternoon and now it is snowing and 11 degrees a few hours later.

I believe there are 24 Cardinals in the last pic, the trees had a few more but I can't capture them all. I do think I may have had 40 today if I counted the Cards in the trees above the ground birds, my pics do not do the scene justice as they are so colorful in my drab winter yard.

Cardinals are so rare where I am that the second photo looks surreal to me.

Ditto here, maybe more so. I've never seen one in real life.

They're always a welcome addition to my Illinois yard, but never really thought about their somewhat limited range. If one is spotted here in S. Texas, some Winter Texans get pretty excited! Thanks for sharing, Steve.

Steve, outstanding 2nd shot. I have many Cardinals in my back yard but only about half as many as yours.

There will be days when you get the shot(s) you missed days, months or years before.

Those are some nice shots of those cardinals Steve. Its pretty neat to see that many together at one time. Getting all forty or so in one shot would have been really interesting. Maybe you will have a chance to do that yet. I have yet to ever see a cardinal. Blue skies and 45 above here today.:-)

That is an amazing number of Cardinals! Goldfinches too...bonus! I'm still thrilled to have one pair hang out since last November!

Sounds to me like you're a budding meteorologist Steve using those cues from Mother Nature :-)
That is an astounding number of Cardinals in your 2nd image....and apparently very smart ones too! I know I've never seen that many in one shot.

There are so many birds that I've not seen too but am fortunate to have these guys in such great numbers. My shots of them are not high quality but wanted to share these to prove that I do have Northern Cardinals and many of them.

Good to hear from you Rog,some of these guys are probably wishing they had went to Texas with you this winter, highs in the single digits for the latter part of the week.:-)

Thanks Ted,I have more at home than on my East farm and not sure why as the terrain is much the same and only 3 miles apart. I do have some crop land on this farm guess that could be the reason.

Thanks Mel, they do brighten up my otherwise drab yard this time of year.

Terry, good to hear from you, The Cardinals are super easy to find here, blue skies and 45 are not. If you keep having that kind of weather you might have unexpected company :-D

Sandy I would have assumed you had a huge flock of Cardinals there at your place. Now as for the Goldfinches they number about 30 to 40 here at my house but at my East farm they are so thick it is unbelievable, possibly more than a hundred at a time there. I need to go over there and shoot them to not only share the number but have some I have doubts about on what their proper names are.

Thanks Steve, not bragging, but between my Cardinals and the wife's recovering shoulder surgery I'm close to an expert at predicting stormy weather. When my wife starts complaining of pain I just as well take out more sun flower seed for the buffet. Behind the shot of them on the ground I have a maple tree about 20 feet tall and a Red Bud tree about 12 feet tall, when there are 25 on the ground there will be another 10 to 20 cardinals in the trees watching. I may be able to capture them all with some planning and may try to do just that. A fresh snow might really make them show up well too.
