I'm building a timelapse slider rig and after fabricating the tripod mounts today, I realized that I need to pick up a couple of tripods to mount this thing on. :-/ A quick search on Amazon for some inexpensive tripods returned tons of results with reviews all over the board. I already have a Manfrotto 3021BPRO with a 468MGRC2 ballhead that I absolutely love, but I want to keep that tripod free for shooting another camera during timelapses, so I'm looking at picking up a pair of tripods to support the slider.

My requirements for these tripods are:

  • less than $100 each
  • ball head included
  • independent leg adjustments (legs aren't linked to a center shaft)
  • ability to get low to the ground without inverting the ball head
  • they don't suck ;-)a

The two that I have in mind currently are:

Dolica GX600B200 Proline (external link)

Ravelli APGL5 (external link)

I'm leaning towards the Dolica due primarily to the most recent reviews for the Ravelly on Amazon being quite poor. The turn off on both of these tripods are that they apparently use proprietary quick release plates. I don't see myself using these tripods for anything other than this slider though, so I wouldn't need to buy a bunch of extra QR plates or anything.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other budget tripods with ball heads to consider that meet my above criteria?

A couple of Dolica's from Costco would do you well. Haven't tried the Ravelli but I do have their background stands (ABSL) and those are very well built.

Thank you for the input...I'm going to pull the trigger on the Dolica I linked to above.

How long is your slider? Depending on the length, you might need to use 2 tripods/supports to ensure stability.

Just shy of 6 feet (1800mm to be exact). I've fabricated two 1/4-20 mounts that can slide anywhere along the entire length of the slider so that I can mount it on two tripods and do inclined movements. I could set one end of the rail on something (table, tree limb, etc.) and mount the other on the tripod, but then I'd need to make some feet that are wide enough to stabilize that end of the rail. The rail itself is only like 2 inches wide, so it tips over easily if it isn't secured on both ends, especially with the sled, ball head and camera mounted.

Well you need 2 supports at the min. If budget is an issue, just use light stands.
