You have picked an excellent subject- you just need to exploit better. Get some different views. Try some up-close shots. Fill the frame with the bass. You'll get the hang of it.

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I recall someone gave me great advice about taking a picture awhile back: take the shot that the person viewing the photo might otherwise never see. In other words, you have a great subject, but i'd love to see it from a completely different perspective than if I had simply walked into the room. I'm impressed by your lighting of the bass, very soft, very complimentary to the wood and the mood of the photos.

As you are just starting , You have got a brilliant little camera. I have used the A75 often and it's one of the best compacts in its range and can give excellent results. A dslr will not improve your photography; only your eyes ability to see will improve that.

The picture of the cello has potential. An interesting composition could be achieved by repositioning, lose the curtain. Make both shadows a feature and making them as an important of the composition as the instrument itself.

keep using the A75 and with practice you will see it's full potential.

wow, thankyou everyone, I didn't expect this many replies. I've been shooting a bit, learning how to use aperture and exposure, and reading a lot. Eventually I'll post some better photos :)

I can appreciate your shots and I think they are interesting enough. I'm not sure what exactly you were expecting but it's a great training exercise. The shadows show the problems associated with the light you are using. I don't know for sure where the lights were pointed but the need for diffusion is evident, unless of course you wanted the shadows. The light is also not covering the whole subject equally.

As to the suggestion that you get a better camera, a DSLR - nonsense! Shoot what you have and learn how to use it. Most of the artistic quality of an image is in the photographer. If you can develop your eye for light and shadow it will carry over to better equipment.

Hey everyone, I tried cropping and editing a tiny bit, I think that this version looks nicer. I'm going to try some closeup shots of stuff later and post em up. Let me know if you think this looks a little nicer.

But then again maybe regular B+W looks best.
