The other day I was walking along the shore of Tampa bay at sun rise when I saw the silhouette of a small bird hovering above the water. It made a few dives and returned to hovering. I thought maybe a Kingfisher but do they hover in flight? and do they hunt in saltwater.
Would be interested to know.

Yes and yes to both your questions. If a perch isn't close to where they like to fish I've seen them hover over the water.

can you describe the bird. was it mostly white with pointy wings? Did it look like a baby seagull. Might have been a Tern.

My guess would be a Forster's Tern. I got some decent shots of one hovering a couple of months back.

Impossible to get any details as it was some distance from me and the sun was rising behind it but I did see a long pointed bill . I had seen a kingfisher regularly in the past about a 1/2 mile further along the shore line and this was about the same size
Thanks for the help

I have never seen a bird stay so stationary in the hover before I would have to say it never moved a quarter inch while in the hover position, remarkable.
