I stole this idea from another forum but shooting my family and its daily events, especially the things that seem monotonous, has fast become my favorite photography. I love trying to document the mundane by trying to choose exciting compositions or exploring light. I made a small thread in the kids section that was well received so I thought, why not? Everyone post your favorite family photojournalism images here!

I'm also a fan or 1, 3, & 6.

Nicely done, it's a good idea. I guess a lot of folk have a "snapshot" train of thought when it comes to their own family but presenting it in a photo-journalism point of view really is great. I'll have to remember this!

Thanks for starting this up Shane! I don't post a lot of these type shots in the usual threads I visit (mainly camera/lens sample threads) because they are probably not all that interesting to the average viewer. But a thread dedicated to this type of photography is a great idea! A couple questions about photojournalism type photography…1) always B&W? 2) always wider angle i.e. at least 50mm and usually more like 35mm or wider? 3) lots of Dof vs shallow Dof?

Holding pattern in the airpot!

No need to always be B&W or wide angle. Photo journalism is kinda hard to define but to me, its a photo that tells a story more than a portrait is.

I LOVE the shot of your boy laying in the chairs at the airport. Its a "real life" shot and it tells me about whats going on.

I really like the camping shot too. There is so much there. The fire pit, the tree saw, your boys shoes and the lack of your girls shoes.

Our children are writing the stories of their lives into their memories and hopefully we can help with out cameras. I remember so many random and pointless things from my childhood but they become magical now that Im a grown up.

Of course, this thread need not be only children oriented too. This should be the good, the bad and everything in between.

I love this thread and the approach to family photography.

I'll admit when I saw the thread title I was dubious, but you did a great job on these. I was anticipating family snap shots, but these are really well executed and nice compositions.

It is a style I have not tried, but admire. Recently I've been looking at Sabastio Salgado's work and this thread reminds me I can exercise this type of photography even in my own home.

Thanks, Nes_Matt! Ill be the first to admit that Im still working on the techniques youre referring to. Its hard sometimes because I have two young children and my wife and I both work full time. Needless to say, and as you can see in some images, my house is a mess. Its fun to try to "simplify" the composition and make a cleaner image.

Let me toss a few color images in here so that no one gets confused.

Great! Thanks for the clarification! So, this thread comes along a a great time for me. I have recently purchased the 17-40 f/4. I have not had a "slow" wide angle lens in a LONG time. It is going to be quite the exercise for myself to use effectively use subject matter, wide angles, creative framing and great Dof to make fun and interesting images. Admittedly I have been partial to wide aperture, shallow dof environmental portraits. This thread will provide incentive to get out there and use the new lens. I really think is is going to be challenging!
